Can anybody who has a child that aspirates tell me how they go about brushing their childs teeth??

My dd is 18mths and aspirates on thin liquids/thin food and fluids she cant even have medicine orally she is also a silent aspirator and her body shows no signs of aspirating at times so we dont know she has done it untill she has chest infection so how do you brush a childs teeth if they aspirate?? x

can you lean her forwards over the sink while you brush? that way everything will dribble out.
i have to do this with my 16mo otherwise he swallows the tooth paste

My dd2 aspirates - we use as little toothpaste as you can, or none at all, make sure the brush is not sodden with water.

Tilt her forward, and hope for the best?

We do brush dd2's teeth even though she aspirates. She is nil by mouth, no food, no meds, nothing and they are talking about reducing her saliva medically (tried patches, they don't work).

She does eventually cough a bit when stuff goes down.

Does you dd have a good productive cough?

Can barely get a toothbrush into DSs mouth as he is so orally defensive. When he's.......not in the mood, shall we say, we use a muslin cloth to gently over his teeth. We also use a strawberry toothpaste as he hates mint, which we find doesn't 'froth' much.
But then, he only has 4 teeth at the moment!

Were you aware that at most special schools the Special Dental Service has a programme of brushing their teeth at school?

So when they're older, it's less of an issue of I can't get the brush in - I know they'll have another go at school.

yes - barely any water or toothpaste. Found these toothbrushes from fledglings quite good cos dc can just bite down on them and then you wiggle a bit cleaning the front and back of the teeth at the same timelink to pdf catalogue here. Its on page 20

tbh I just do my best and accept they really don't get cleaned properly. Find myself thinking - hey ho, she'll get another set. Maybe she will be better with it all then

After going blue after a breath holding incedent when trying to force this, and the numerous pneumonias its the lesser worry

However, I did make sure last week when she was having a GA that she got her teeth cleaned properly. So yeah if there's a dentistry dept of yr hospital get in with them and then push for them to clean teeth whilst other procs being done
