Hello

My DS who has DS and is now 14 months old has discovered his new teeth and is grinding them into dust already!!!! oh and I cannot stand the sound (he sounds like a little baby ET which I am not sure is a good thing for him!)!

Why is he doing this and how do I get him to stop???? has anyone got any experience of this?

HELP

Hi Fizzy,
I have brain frieze at the mo but try chewy toys. My son still chews his at nearly 9 yo but it stops him chewing his fingers for a while. Take care x

Hello You!
was hoping you might come along with some words of wisdom! Yes, if he has something else to chew on all is good but as soon his mouth is empty the grinding starts!
How are things with you?

Err I grind my teeth during my seizures and often use a plastic tooth sheild I got from the dentist (at a cost of £100 ).

Ds 5.5 has ground his teeth to the point of the nerves being exposed.

OT explained this as sensory seeking behaviour. Apparently its to do with the proprioceptive sense, that craves input from muscles and joints.

There are excerises you can do with him, that provide input in a more appropriate way and hopefully stop or lessen the grinding.

I can list some of the excerises i have been given to do with ds, if thats any help to you?

Ds doesnt grind his teeth in the day anymore, just in his sleep now. Im not sure if its the excerises that have worked or whether its just too painful to grind anymore!

Thank you loudlass and claw3, thats useful info - I did wonder about the sensory seeking part of it - I will speak with his OT about exercises in a bid not to spend £100 on a shield

DD1 does this and still does, horrible but denist was not much help and suggested it might be etter to wait till adult teeth are in

FnD, wearing a shield all day, or at any time would be intolerable for my ds. Make sure he would tolerate it before you spend £100.

Not particularly helpful either if they speech delays, like ds.
