Nintendo Wii and ASD

Hi, i am usually against game consoles, dh has his xbox which i hate. At xmas we visited SIL and dd1 had a go on her cousins Wii.

Dd1 has AS and low muscle tone in her arms and legs, she really enjoyed Wii sports and loved the bowling and boxing and i was wondering if moving her arms around so much would build her muscles up a bit as well as help with hand eye co-ordination.

Has anyone with ASD/AS children got a Wii? I am worried if we get one she may become addicted to it (like the pc).

we have one for dd, and will admit we have one BUT we have to ban DD1 from all compters Monday-Thursday. She will sit for hours on her DS, PC or Wii and it was making her very stressed, so now limited to weekends, which helps.

HTH

You're a poet and you don't know it!

We got one or the same reason.. my son has autism and low muscle tone and doesn't go outside to play and we thought it would be good for him..and it has been!
He loves the bowling and even the wii fit (sporadically..we had to stop him for a while as he got obsessed) and I think that any exercise is better than none (he's thin as a rail but has NO muscle mass so figured it might help!)

I think limiting it is good tho.. as it can cause a lot of stress!

We have to limit it to basically weekends only too, as J would be obsessed, but it's been great for him and really helped his shocking fine and gross motor skills. Definitely worth the money.

We just got one for Xmas - it's great! DS1 (dyspraxic) gets a bit het up when he can't do the games, but we are stressing the fact that it'll help his coordination and strength. And DS2, who is severely autistic, likes the bowling and skiing games, even though we have to do them hand over hand with him atm.

Givememoresleep - which games have helped your DS's fine motor skills?

The non-physical ones, like quiz games - the Horrible Histories ones require fine motor skills.

It is very early days with a Wii, but our family lives have changed out of all proportion since we got a dslite a year ago. Ds is not able to do waiting but with a ds to distract and entertain him waiting rooms and even meals out are now possible. I feel ds concentration and fine motor skills have both taken a leap forward. Once set up with a new game he needs little help (he cannot read).I am hoping the Wii (fit with board) will help with balance and gross muscle skills. Ds likes the archery, boxing and skiing. It is more sociable in that ds needs help and he does get quite sore muscles the next day- I think he holds the sqidgy thing too tight, so that naturally limits use at the moment.
