Not sure I like they way they refer to autism as a "disease".
Also scares me that in the US they usually give drugs for autism

VirginPeachyMotherOfSpod · 21/12/2009 19:49

Er what?

Every res4earcher I know understands that we arelooking at autisms

Nobody thinks thereis onecuase any moredo they?

Andas for anything marketing chelation and anti mercury forevery child- I am soooo anti pushing ofso called ASC' treatments' anyway but there is research out there, I sawsome today when looking for Uni research and can happily drag it up and copy it on (didn;t read it as not what I was after so cannot argue for what it concluded)

daisy5678 · 21/12/2009 19:53

So the boy went swimming and got a dx of autism a week later?

waitingforgodot · 21/12/2009 20:15

yes that was a bit weird. Why did the neighbour not tell the mum!
I thought it was interesting-not that I necessarily agreed with it but I like reading things that make me think (and also that spark debate with you feisty lot!)

Definitely interesting! But bizarre!

VirginPeachyMotherOfSpod · 21/12/2009 21:42

feisty? Us?

like sweet kittens, we are

TotalChaos · 21/12/2009 21:47

that week timescale didn't ring true did it? that within one week you would have concerns sufficient to see a specialist, see the specialist and get the DX.

do they really commonly prescribe meds in the US to young kids with ASD?

It's very polemical, here is his Wiki page.

I'm a bit shocked about routine meds too!

ouryve · 21/12/2009 22:13

Most of the autistic American kids I know who take drugs are on them for a very good reason.

We're at the point with DS1 where we know he needs something. He's supposedly high functioning if intelligence is to be used as a marker for that, but his ADHD/ODD and general levels of anxiety and aggression have reached a point where there's times he's simply not functioning and is extremely challenging. Without medical help to stabilise his nervous system and help him focus, there's no way we're ever going to be able to apply any behavioural techniques to him and it's plain that the boy is not in a happy place .

am i the only one that went though every stage of development when dd1 got her "informal" dx? before she had jabs or anything else the signs were there.
Do you ever get the idea the article was written but someone who feel mercery might cause asd

We had an EEG for DD (clear) and here in France it's routine for ASD. Occasionally also MRI but not in DD's case as nothing to indicate brain damage. We also had full genetic and metabolic tests (also clear). In her case I don't feel vaccines had anything to do with it, but I wouldn't dream of dismissing people who feel that it did affect their child because I have no way of knowing.
I'm also not against drugs if they are given in a considered way, just the "routine" dosing of ASD kids does scare me because often some of these drugs can have fairly nasty side effects. Interesting point about the keto diet - I could see that it might work in the case of severe ASDs.

Well believe me, if we end up medicating DS1, it's because he really really needs it and he's actually suffering without it. It wouldn't even cross our minds for DS2 unless something goes seriously awry in the next few years.

hairyclaireyfairy · 22/12/2009 23:23

I fear our ds 8, is about to be discharged from his Psychiatrist (severe autism)because we are against the idea about medicating him, a slippery slope, imho.
Grrrr
