Hi. my 7 y o son has moderate dyslexia, also some dyspraxia and possible add.
His private school does not seem to believe in dyslexia (ARGH) and im urgently seeking either a special school or a school with a special unit.
so far ive heard of feltonfleet in cobham and kingswood in epsom, but we live in wimbledon and cant afford to move house and do fees.
i would do the commute tho. anyone have experience of these schools or know of others? please help!!

Hi,
one of my friends sends her son to Fairley House school in Pimlico, which specialises in teaching children with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. I think her son, who's about the same age as yours, goes to school by taxi everyday from east London. Have a look on the website.. she speaks very highly of it, and although the fees are a bit steep, you might be able to get help from your LEA if you need it.

I also remember hearing some time ago about a school in Lewisham which speacialised in teaching kids with mild or borderline difficulties. It might be worth calling the Lewisham LEA to ask about that too.

But your Council should have a list of schools for special needs, and they may not all be in the local area... I know I was sent a list with my son's last annual review of statement. I could look it out for you if you need it.

Does your son have a statement ( of special needs)? it would set out his needs, and his school would have to demonstrate how they are meeting them. and it might help you access other support. I'm not sure how it works in the private education system, but all state schools have to have a SENCo ( Special Educational Needs coordinator) or in current language 'Inclusion Manager' who would (should!) normally help in your situation.

Hope it's helpful.

Centre Academy and The Dominie in Battersea take children with dyslexia.

In Surrey, there is More House, Moon Hall and Knowl Hill.

we have moved our son a couple of months ago to Moon Hall in Holmbury St mary - it is fee paying but changed our sons life - from struggling he has become a confident young man

thanks so much... he doesnt have a statement, which means that fairley house, the dominie and blossom house in wimbledon are all a bit ruinous - 7.5k a term... im going to keep on searching - there seems to be a lot in surrey. xxx

bigel,

Has your son been refused a statement, or do you simply not wish to have one?

Blossom House is a very good school, and you'd be able to make a case for the LEA to cover the fees if your DS had a statement. Associated travel costs too. From my own experience here in central London, virtually any state school worth consideration is heavily oversubscribed.

At this point, a statement could be your best bet of a great school .. at no cost to yourself.

Have you thought about some intensive instruction like Lindamood-Bell? My friend's child went there and they worked wonders.

My own personal experience with Fairley House was not good at all.

This thread is over a year old.

@Meg1980. We are about to decide the next step for our ds (7yrs) and Fairley house is one of our options. Can I ask you what was your experience? Thanks!
