So is the Piedro Boot range quite limited then??

Ds had his appointment at the splint clinic this afternoon, he's never been fond of the things and will only tolerate them for an hour or so at a time, i reckon they make his dystonic spasms worse as he fights against them.
the last pair he got were too tight within a few weeks with all the weight he was putting on so he hasnt been wearing them at all, the school physio puts him in his standing frame without them and she reckons he weightbears ok.

Told the orthotic chap about them being too tight and that you can literally pour the sweat out of them when you take them off, school physio had been wondering about getting them cut down to ankle height so they werent pressing on his calf muscle when he had a spasm and maybe getting holes drilled in them to let the moisture out.

orthotic chap stood ds up to see what his feet were like on the floor then played about with his feet, he reckons he still has a great range of movement, he could easily push his ankle up past 90 degrees so said the calf muscle hasnt shortened at all despite not having splints on for the best part of a year, but that his feet are a bit flat.

upshot of this is that the splints were flung in the bin and he is now going to go back to just insoles, i asked about Piedro boots and he said he would order him up a pair, bit suprised as friends have found it nigh on impossible to get Piedro boots supplied up here.

just wondering what the Piedro range is like as he only asked me two questions, black or navy? and velcro or laces?

i think there is quite a good range our physio told us to look on the web site here and pick which ones we wanted, we can get any stye we want, and are allowed to keep ds's first pair but have to return the rest when he has out grown them.

My Ds got his 1st pair fitted in November. The orthotic shown us a new catalouge and there was quite a good range. We chose a brown pair (apparently they are new colour) with laces and i am really happy with them. Look really smart and have even had comments from other mums as too where we got them from, they were surprised when i said they were piedro boots.

yeah had a look at the gilbert and mellish website and they look quite nice!
we are going for the velcro option so its either black leather or black, navy or brown nubuck, id be quite pleased with any of them to be honest!
anyone know how much they are if i want to buy a pair in another colour?

my friend's DD has pink lace ups. my friend once got stopped in the street to be asked where she got those nice shoes from

meltedmincepies · 12/12/2009 09:16

We had red ones here, with laces. Now we have proper splints with whatever-cheap-shoe-will-fit-over-the-damn-things!

you can also get sandal-types for the summer.

glittery · 12/12/2009 09:26

better not let ds see the catalogue then he'll be wanting the pink ones!

DS2 has just got his first pair. He's only an 8.5 and in the shorter style velcro ones, there was a choice of one whole pair. They look nice, though - much like Kick-Hi in style in a beige nubuck, so they go with anything and he loves that he can stomp really hard and loud in them!

We're a bit miffed, though, because the tongue in one of them keeps slipping down. Like instantly slipping all the way down after he's walked one length of the lounge in them. I'm just glad we have a follow up in the new year, because if we had paid for them, I'd be rather cross.

glittery · 12/12/2009 13:23

i quite like the beige nubuck ones actually, i'll probably get them as a second pair as, like you say, they should go with everything.
ds doesnt walk so hopefully we wont have the tongue slipping down problem!

DD2 has black patent ones & we do not have to give them back, when outgrown, which is a good job as her first pair were nearly worn through with her shuffling on her knees wearing them!!!

meltedmincepies · 14/12/2009 14:41

Ouryve, our Piedro's (laced onces) had a loop in the tongue to thread the laces through to stop the tongue slipping. Is there nothing like that on the velcro ones?

chegirlwithbellson · 14/12/2009 14:49

I work as part of a specialist children's team/CDT.

Our physios have a huge range of piedros in loads of colours and styles.

I think the pink ones are beautiful

They look like Kickers. So much better than years ago.

AngryFromManchester · 14/12/2009 15:56

my daughter has purple ones too I have tried and failed to get her to have any oter colour over the yearsd!

feelingbetter · 14/12/2009 19:40

Ouryve
You can have a loop fitted on to the tongue to thread the strap thru, or they can stitch the tongue to one side of the upper at the top to stop it slipping

claudialyman · 16/12/2009 17:04

you can also have a retaining strap fitted which goes in the side of the shoe, under/over the tounge out the other side and buckles. Meant to keep the shoe on for those that that take them off. DS can still lever them off but he is apparently very special that way . He walks better with the strap on as his heels stay down in the shoe. And the new rich brown colour is lovely

Meltedmincepies and feeling better, thanks for that info. The tongue on these is just plain. They're a shorter boot for little legs and just have 2, fairly thick velcro straps. I'll definitely ask if there's anything that can be done when I go back in January that won't affect his ability to put them on himself (which would cause meltdowns), since it's a real nuisance when the tongue falls right out.
