We have had a meeting to discuss our child and his reduced schooling over the past year.
After what has felt like a very long journey, we eventually were given an aspergers diagnosis this year. Does anyone know how many hours is reasonable to expect a child to be in school for. I dont think our child is being given a fair chance and is therefore being failed by the education system. He has huge gaps in his education and we are wondering at what point this will be addressed. Does every family experience this slowness with the 'system'?
At what point do you step in and begin home educationg alongside the state system?

How old is your DS now?.

Is he on the SEN register at school, is he known to the SENCO?.

Has anyone ever mentioned the word "Statement" to you?.

Hi Meercat! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you - this is the only time of day I get some peace and quiet to go online!
My ds is 8 yrs. He doesn't yet have a statement. However, they are starting more assessments in order to try to get one for him. They told us this takes nearly 30weeks - is that really the case?
It seems so dreadfully slow, we feel we need to do more for him.
Yes he is known by the SENCO at the school.

How many hours is he actually in school for, did they partially exclude him?. If so on what grounds?.

You can actually apply to the LEA for a Statement on your son;s behalf. You do not need the school to do it (and in many cases schools sit on such apps for ages anyway).

IPSEA's website www.ipsea.org.uk have model letters you can use. It is better to make the application yourself as you can appeal if the LEA say no to assessment. The school cannot do this.

Statements can indeed take around six months to set up even if it is straight forward (the content of parts 2 and 3 which are the most important parts on the whole thing often needs amendment).

I would certainly be talking to independent organisations like IPSEA and or SOS;SEN about your son's situation at school.

On a wider level you may want to apply for DLA as well for your DS.
