We had our first meeting with Ed Psych who suggested PECS for DS (aged 3 currently being assessed for ASD). He has high levels of understanding but low levels of output if you see what I mean. He is still at 2 word sentences, mainly requests but we are working on that to try and build on it. The SALT has never mentioned PECS as an option and I am not sure how useful it would be. I admit I dont know that much about it but wouldn't he stop verbalising and rely more on giving me a picture?

Cyber-our mutual friend is going to create some visual supports for DS. I am curious to see how he reacts.

Yes - we have a language board from 'our mutual friend' - That sounds like the title of a book ? Dickens maybe ?

Starlight has put it very well.
The child needs to know the 'rules of the game' and if they are able, they will whizz through possibly first four stages in a day (I've often seen it) and will then be able to concentrate on building really complex sentences, the visual prompt of the system helping them streeeeeeetch and scaffold language in a way they could never do relying on speech alone because once the word is out of your mouth, it's gone.

But, most people don't know how to use PECS properly so it cna look ridiculous, therefore i understand your frustration.
