My DS is 4.5 and has recently started arm flapping when outside. He arm flaps when running etc. There was no sign of this before a couple of months ago so is something new here. No sign of the finger twirling.....yet

DS2 has done hand flapping from as far as I can remember, but if I was going to try pin point an age, I'd say 18 monthish, give or take a few months either way.

Dd2 has always hand flapped, she started spinning and flicking her eyes at 3 years old.

MumOfThreeMonkeys · 04/12/2009 17:35

my dd aged 5.6 jumps more than flaps and tbh i never really noticed it until it was pointed out to me by health proffesionals, so cant really say when it started... but she has just started spinning in the last few weeks and wont stop, i actually feel that she is getting more autistic as she gets older, another new thing in the last few weeks in turning light switches on and off, she cant walk past them without switching them about 10 times

cyberseraphim · 04/12/2009 17:37

Started flapping about 4 ? Still going strong at 5.8

DS2 looks like a humming bird when he runs, he does it on his tip toes and flaps his hands close to his shoulders

FanjoForTheMankySocks · 04/12/2009 17:43

My DD flaps her hands but its more like a tic, its like she cannot help it and would even like to stop it, its very strange.

She does spin and look sideways etc though.

MumOfThreeMonkeys · 04/12/2009 17:48

dd always looks sideways when she runs

TessTing · 04/12/2009 17:55

From around the age of 2 (now much older) but usually when running through some over stimulating immaginative play in his head.

BriocheDoree · 04/12/2009 18:07

DD1 has started doing the hand twirling thing but also seems to be part of imaginative play (such as she has)/interesting interior monologue

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 04/12/2009 18:52

dd1 has informal dx of ASD (dont ask!) but been keeping an eye on DD2 who is 2years now. Shes started hand flapping the last few weeks, and lines things up. She dispalys some traits of ASD but not others, hense my asking.
When given blocks at 2 year check she lined them up in colour order
Not quite sure if i need to do anything atm though.

Ds (4y) was definately hand/finger twirling by the time he was 2y (possibly earlier but my memory is a bit foggy )
He has started the arm flapping when really upset or when totally in his bubble, this is fairly recent, started about 3 months ago or so.

He also has phases of when the stims are quite bad and other times when they seem to fade....but always make a comeback on the double!

mysonben · 04/12/2009 21:29

Oh yeah, DS also flaps when he runs and shuffle quickly on toes with head cocked to the side...quite strange .

5inthesleighbed · 04/12/2009 21:35

Lisa, ds2 didn't line things up until he went to school. Now he lines those number cube things in a vertical line, and (apparently) goes absolutely scatty if the teacher tried to get him to put them upwards.

jackny · 04/12/2009 22:10

DS has hand-flapped when excited since 2.5yrs and he is now started spinning at 3.9yrs. He also is toe walking again - he started that at 2yrs and stopped at 3yr ish but it has returned. In the last two months he has also taken to mouthing objects - he had stopped that at 18mths - it is really odd!

ouryve · 04/12/2009 23:34

DS1 (6) has done various permutations of hand flapping and twirling since he was 2. DS1(3.7) has been spinning for about 6 months, but has never hand flapped.

In terms of other stims, both boys started stimming by rubbing their heads on the floor when they were about 2.5. DS1 has done lots of vocal stims, on and off for as long as I can remember. DS2 has recently started stomping a LOT. It's his favourite way of waking us up at 5am!
