Is Stimming always a sign of ASD?

Ds1, 11, hand flaps in the air, slaps his hands against his chest, bites his arms, and clicks his fingers when he is excited and stimulated by games, films etc. I have read that its almost always a sign of autism. He has cerebral palsy and the hospital don't like duel dx, so whenever we mention our concerns they push them to one side.

He has social problems, and finds it very hard in social situations.

he is very bright too, and can do things on a computer that I can't even think about.

we have another appointment on the 10th so am going with as much info as possibe this time.

One of the first things we were asked by the Paed who dx'ed ds2 was if he hand flaps, which he did and still does. And I know a few children with ASD, and they all hand flap.

Noticed tonight he also licks his hand.. The clicking fingers and licking is a recent thing.

When he was a toddler he used to bang his head on the floor repeatly, but that stopped when he was about 5 and replaced by hand flapping. I have filmed it many times and taken it to appointments but the doctor just said Ds1 was excited..

The hand flapping has increased in strengh (sp?) and occasion now.

He said he doesn't know if he does it at school as he isn't aware he is doing it anyway.

DS2 licks everything, even the slides in soft plays

TotalChaos · 29/11/2009 21:13

I don't think by itself it would be a sign of ASD, but it could be relevant in conjunction with other problems (language/social etc).

SparklyGothKat · 29/11/2009 21:13

lol, DD1 used to lick everything, yuk.

I cant find my lead.. it looks like he could take off the speed his hands go, when he gets going. Watched a few videos on youtube of children stimming and its like watching DS1.

My DS2 flaps continuously - he is 6 and has low functioning autism.Only started flapping at three tho. Before that it was spinning (himslef and anything he could) and pushing his head against the floor.

He flaps at youtube - particularly roller coasters and waterslides.

He had sereve SAL problems when he was younger, he didn't talk till he was 3, he was in a SN nursery with a SALT group.

He doesn't understand sayings either, if I said 'its raining cats and dogs' he used to say 'I can't see any cats or dogs'

remind you of anyone sis?

TotalChaos · 29/11/2009 21:22

the stimming does sound potentially worth following up with the paed, given you have other concerns about his language/social skills.

stillenacht · 29/11/2009 21:22

his favourite

we must see this over 200 times a day!

stillenacht · 29/11/2009 21:24

misdee - that is spot on to my boy but without the language.

SparklyGothKat · 29/11/2009 21:25

this is the one that reminded me of DS1 Misdee

that is very muh like your ds1 Sparkly.

SparklyGothKat · 29/11/2009 21:32

TBH, at this stage, a DX wouldn't make any difference to DS1, its how he is and we all know he does this strange things with his hands, but would be nice to know why he does it IYKWIM
