DS panicking about assembly tomorrow - help!

DS (6,possbile AS) has been told he is 'learner of the week' in his class. He has been doing brilliantly this week.

This means he has to get up in assembly with all the other 'learners' from different classes and get a sticker. Parents are present.

He did this last year and was fine.

Now he is terrified. He has panicked himself all night and has started to get upset about other stuff like lunch time as well.

What would you do? I will speak to the teacher in the morning but I know they will be guided by me. I'm certainly not going to force him but I would like to persuade him to get his moment of glory. The rest of the class know he's been chosen so if he doesn't do it, he will stand out.

Or should I just not let that worry me and tell them to hangfire until another time?

completely understand.

  1. could sticker awarding person go over to him where he is sitting and give him sticker so he does not have to go to front
  2. could sticker awarding person say she is giving sticker to his form tutor to give to him in class time later for a special clap from class
  3. could you go up with him
  4. could friend go with him (sure class teacher would understand)
  5. could you go for him and pass it over to him
suggest you don't put it off till another week as this just gives him more dreading time. get it over with tomorrow but without having to go to the front. well done to him anyway!!

I would probably encourage him to do it if he's managed before, as long as you think he can actually cope. If you have time, I'd do a little story about it - telling him what will happen, but also giving him a get-out clause that he can tell the teacher if he doesn't want to.

Sometimes J is worse if he's unsure about how something will happen. Warning him about things like 'people will clap' and talking it through seems to help.

Well done to him and good luck!

How did it go in the end? Did he manage alright?

debs40 · 21/11/2009 22:30

Thanks mysonben he did really well. I was so proud of him. His teacher gave him a little system to show that he was feeling worried (thumbs up) but he got up with his puppet and showed it to the head and explained he had made it.

I wanted to whoop loudly

I think giving him a way out made it feel more manageable
