i am having to look at primary school places for ds1 and near us in a ms school with a speech and language base. I am just reading through their policies and have come across this
"Children whose difficulties are primarily pragmatic, including children on the autistic spectrum, would not be normally appropriate for the speech and language units"
Does this mean all children with asd are by nature of their dx excluded?
From my understanding pragmatic difficulties come under receptive language where ds1 has been assessed as near age appropiriate so he would not have such difficulties.
Ds1's main difficulty is expressive speech. He is due for dx in jan/feb i dont want to push for a dx if it is going to exclude him from getting into the base and therefore getting the help he needs.
What do you think?

To me it sounds like they dont want children who already have statements, as i assume they would already be 'provided' for in ms school.

I remember a few MNers commenting on this. Yes it seems that at least some language units refuse children who have a dx of ASD, even when their particular needs include language difficulties.

Pragmatic speech is that used to socialise and comminicate.

I'm guessing then don't want to take on children that only have problems expressing themselves in that way and that don't have a general speech delay. But then lots of children with asd do have a speech delay in more than jsut pragmatic speech, so I dont think an asd diagnosis would exclude them altogether?

Older thread about units and ASD

Children who could not cope with ms, but who have the potential (ie no severe learning difficulties)to enter ms after therapy (hence, this is not suppose to be a permanent placement, which is why they dont want the statement)

Whereas for ASD units, you need a dx and a statement!

forgot to say on the criteria for admission is a statement or in the process of. Or upto date reports.
If i were to diagnose ds1 i would say sli with asd traits but it looks like to get the help i have to try to not get him dx. Will obviously check with the school what the criteria is and are there exceptions.
Thing is the school is just round the corner from us and if he did not have speech problens would be number 2 on the list anyway so will just put as number 1.
Sorry for shouting but now the big question is
DO I GET AN ASD DX OR NOT?
Thanks for the replies it does look like more of a battle if he has the dx.
