Can anyone advice me on what to do as my son has just got excluded for 4 days for his behaviour that has been going on over the last 3 yrs since nursery but has got worse as he has got older.I will give you a bit of background as to the type of things he does Tearing his work and others swearing hitting children especially girls refusing to work for the teachers being very distruptive in school and he is the same at home. He has been taking melatoin to help him sleep for the last 3 months as he was waking up and wandering around and he goes to see a consultant every 3 months as they think he has adhd and has been getting observations done at school for autism as he just doesnt seem to show any empathy when he does anything wrong and to exclude him isnt going to help him in anyway. He hasnt got a statement as yet until he gets a diagnosis but the school is aware that he has special needs help as i dont know what to do

Hiya merle yeah he has been back at school just over a wwk now
He wasnt any different the first few days the school is trying all they cah atm until the lea decides to give him more ls which we have agreed he is needing ft but atn=m the lea are just putting it off and we feel we are getting no where with it all He started on the ritalin and thankfully we have a new son one that listens seems to understands more is concentrating more and isnt half as violent and distruptive as he has been so we can see a mega difference and for the first time in 3 yrs we love going to school to pick him up The head even took him to the bank and the post office as a treat for him being so good oh its bliss We have had a few nightmares since he has been on the ritalin and we are finding that the melatoin isnt working as good as he is waking up about 6ish every morning but hey we are enjoying our new ds son so who cares
thankyou ritalin

Glad to hear that. The boy I know seems to suit it very well and it is lovely to see him calm and learning. Hope things continue to improve. It must be a relief going to pick him up without that feeling of dread (I remember it well).

my 6 year old has been excluded from school and we have been told no other local school will take him! can this be true? does anyone know where we stand on this matter any advice would be helpful.

Sarah4455, you'd probably be better to start a new thread and give a bit more information. I'm sure you'd get more replies that way.

my grandson has been going to special needs school since he was 6yrs. He was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 9, had to move school at the age of 13 due to his behaviour. He has now been excluded from this school. After years of trying to ask people weather they thought he was dyslexic and being told no i managed to get him on to a research for dyslexic people to be told that he is. Does anybody know who should have picked this up? And Also would things have been different for him?

Many Thanks

I would be very careful with ritalin. My ds had been on it for four years, untill one day i overheard a conversation about it. so i jumped on computer and typed his drug in. O M G! everything i read was telling me my ds should not be on this medication. His main problems being aggression, anger and anxiety,he is violent and has gone to a BESD school for the last two years (weekly boarder),to keep him and everybody else safe, which by the way is the most fantastic place. Sorry i know Im rambling, but Ritalin should not be used to treat patients with anger, aggression or anxiety. the reason for this is that there is virtually no clinical difference between the effects of ritalin and cocaine. It states how the use of it encourages the seeking out, if you like,of other subtances i.e smoking recreation and prescription drugs. My ds is smoking 50g pouch of tobacco a week, he is not 12 until june. After some other very worrying information, including the fact it should not be used on patients with family history of schitzophrenia, you guessed it my ds father was a paranoid schitzophrenic, who subsequently hung himself, after being repeatedly let down by the mental health service. SO,I demanded a change in medication

sorry ran out of room! They were very reluctant to take him off it, he now has an antidepressant atomoxetine, it took six weeks to transfer, as it is dangerous to just stop taking it. My ds is a different child. He is no Angel, and we know he never will be, but he is now able to feel happiness, he never has in his life. His anger and aggression have been dramatically improved.I am mortified about the whole thing. From the onset i have always thoughtr my ds has got tourettes or some kind of autistic spectrum disorder, i have always stated about how depressed he has always been, although they dont assess children under ten for depression!?!? they said no. They are now arranging to reassess my ds, for the above stuff.Anyway if you like me feel you kind of know whats wrong have a look to see what they use as treatment, because Ritalin should not be used with tourettes either! Good Luck x

Im back for another quick rant, meeting other people over the years and talking to them about the Battle you have to wage inorder to get your child the help and education they need, unless you push like a steam train the LA will quite happily keep your child, in a problem situation. think of all the people who would be out of a job if they actually helped, they do tend to only help themselves im sure you will of heard of the word FUNDING! Its an absolute joke, chick, you need to fight for your child because they really are just a name and number to everyone in the realm of the LA. Apply for statutory assessment yourself. Remember your child has a right to be educated. Dont let them tell you, find out yourself what can be done.I would start ringing round the indpendant and non maintained schools now so that when you get a statement those choices are available to you x

Reading this post has brought tears to my eyes. I am having difficulties at school with my 5 yr old's behaviour and they want to exclude him for half a day here and there but so far i have made every excuse to avoid it because i think once i agree to pick him up then they will use it as an excuse to have easier afternoons. Sorry enough about me!!!

Have you been in touch with your local education welfare officer- you can get information on your county council's website but basically each school has one and they are there to work with the parents and school to avoid exclusion- they may also be another voice in your plight for mpre support from the school.

I understand how difficult it is and how it encroaches on the rest of family life- our situation began to effect my younger dauhter and it broke my heart. I often think i have failed as a parent other times i just want to home school my child to protect him- how emense is the love for our children!!!

I wish you the best of luck with your situation and I hope you and your child get your needs met xxx

My child is on concerta, we notice a difference within 30mins. It does affect appitite and growth. However with encouragement to eat and fortifying his milk it seems to be ok. You can get Meletonin from the consultant to help with sleep. Its a natural product and over time does help enormously.....
Hows things now at school???

Hi Coultie

Our son (ADHD) was on Ritalin from around 6 years of age. While it did take a few weeks to get the dosage right at first, we found it made a large positive difference to all our lives.

He was less impulsive and able to concentrate more.

Our experience on weight loss was yes Ritalin did take the edge off our sons appetite and this kept him with a slight build until he came off Ritalin when he was about 14 years of age.

He soon put the weight back on with no ill effects.

Usually when this medication is prescribed the consultant will monitor weight, hight and blood pressure every 3-6 months minimum.
