Well ds Mri results are in and had a meeting , seems that ds laungage or lack of is not just down to the oral dyspraxia .Turns out at some point they reckon probably befor the birth ds had a blood clot and the part of area that controlls speech is completley destroyed which would explain whe he snever done any sound other than uh.

There is also some damage to area that controls movement as well ,That i can handle but was the realastion today that ds is likely to never speak and no amount of speech therapy will make any differnace to his inablity to verbally communicate

Ds does have a receptive delay hes around 2.7 but is 4.2 now. That again there putting down to brain damge .Hecommunicates by signing though thats in his own form due to issues with his fine and motor control aswell as pointing and gestures .So hes right mixed muddle up along with the very definte oral dyspraxia

Communication Matters is great because they offer so much for free. He actually sounds like ds1 in many ways - he also has his own bunch of signs due to lots of motor problems. Your ds's receptive language & communication sounds a lot better than ds1's & I'm sure he will fly once you find a communication method (or combination) that works for you.

Something I find really good with ds1 is using what I call tapping. It's sort of a modified version of the informative pointing technique (also free to do and learn- see the link on my blog). So I tend to say do you want X and tap on one spot or Y and tap on another. Ds1 'selects' by tapping on the correct spot. I had to start with very different spots (so front/back of a chair for example, or table and floor, - or I needed to write draw on paper and tap, but now I can do it side by side on a handy wall or table. I also use to to do 'are you saying X or SOMETHING ELSE' which ds1 understands and responds to- useful when I'm not quite sure I've understood what he's telling me and of course YES and NO.

Ds1 looks as if he might be heading for an MRI (although the wait for the nuero is almost a year I think), I wouldn't be at all surprised to find something similar in him tbh given all the similarities you've described.

BUT BUT BUT do give yourself time to get used to the idea. Remember it's a marathon not a race etc. And if you want to check out AAC porn have a look at the Tango (now sold by Dynavox I think).

Yes LEA will be a fight.

Might be worth looking at charities too. For example this is exactly the sort of thing that Rotary's love to fund (and then you will be able to choose exactly what you want), also charities like the Beckhams children's charity. And there are some specific AAC ones (we have one locally).

For example say you loved the Tango and thought it would be perfect. (It looks near perfect to me - I am obsessed ) there is no way the LEA would ever fund it. Not in a million years because there are cheaper alternatives which will do an OK job. A charity might well fund it though, because their main aim would be to get the perfect piece of equipment for your son, not to save money!
