Just a moan...

Some of you may remember we were looking into a nursery for dd starting Sept as I was intending to return to work part time. At this stage I have applied to a school but am waiting for an interview. They have now put off their interviews until after half term. We managed to find one that would cater to her needs the most appropriately.

Today the nursery called saying that they had dd on the waiting list but they wanted to know what days I would need care. I told them I was unable to state which days we needed at this time. As soon as I knew, I assured them, I would let them know. They then said they would see what days were available at that stage.

My concern is we found a nursery that is brilliant for dd but she will not end up being able to go for the time we need as those days will fill up. I suggested they put us down for all days and we would then confirm what days we needed. They stated that would make a difference to the deposit we would need to pay. I did not see what was wrong with that but they seemed very reluctant to go with this idea?!?!

I am just a bit annoyed and feeling a bit pressured. Do we go ahead and pay for a full month's deposit? Why can't we do that and then if we only need it for two days a week - can't that amount be put in credit in terms of her fees???? We could not afford to lose that money?!?!

Do I forget about the job I applied for - perhaps I will not even be shortlisted and look elsewhere or apply to an agency to do supply work instead?!?!

AAAaaaaaaaaaghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! I just don't have any other options re: childcare - all my family and good friends are in Australia - the in laws are too far away and our friends here all work. I am so annoyed!!

I guess from the nursery's point of view, if you reserve 5 days a week and then only want 2 they've lost out on 3 days that they could have allocated to another child.

Can they do it so that you pay the full deposit and then the balance is refunded provided they fill the days you're not going to take?

Have you asked them if the extra deposit could go to the term fees? I can see what you are saying Soupdragon, but if there is a waiting list I can't see how they would lose out at all. There will be someone who will want to fill the extra days, surely?

I always feel much more pressured when talking on the phone Eidsvold, so maybe you could write to them and put your questions that way? Then you will have time to consider your answers.

Yes, in theory there shouldn't be a problem. There may be some time where the "unwanted" days are wasted though if they can't find someone to start immediately they become available and this will cost them money.

I'm really playing devil's advocate here by the way. I don't think it's particularly fair but I can see where the nursery is coming from

You don't run a nursery do you by any chance ? I can't believe a nursery with a waiting list couldn't find someone to snap the spare days up straight away though.

thanks for letting me moan - I do see their point but I am looking at letting them know in June what days we will need for September?!?! Am I wrong in thinking that is plenty of time. I guess it just seemed like dd would flourish there and would benefit rather than the other nursery we saw where it became apparent her special needs would not be meet effectively.

Once again - thanks just for letting me moan!
