Where can I get large nappies. Pampers 6+ now too small for DS (3.3). Also on 3rd stroller in a year. He broke one today in a temper trying to get out.Can anyone advise on a good strong one (He is as big as a 5 yr old).Thx

Can't help with the nappies but I recently bought a Babydan Stockholm stroller which is great for bigger children as it goes up to 23kg and has a large seat. It's very sturdy and has weighted back wheels so is anti-tip. Got mine on ebay for £39. My dd is 27 months and has low tone so will be in a pushchair for a good few years yet - my ds who is 5 fits in the pushchair fine!!

feelingbetter · 03/09/2009 20:54

I find Tesco own brand nappies much more generously sized (and a better fit!) than pampers.

reiver · 03/09/2009 21:25

Have you tried the new design Tesco own brand size 6 nappies though, feelingbetter? Says 'improved fit' on the packet but they actually seem much smaller than before. Shame they've changed them.

glitteryb6 · 03/09/2009 21:29

mountain buggy, phil & teds, emmaljunga scooter, out n about nipper 360,baby jogger city all have higher weight limits but some are a bit pricey

5inthebed · 03/09/2009 21:43

Someone said the Lidl size 6 nappies are quite generous. Tesco pullups are also larger, but I found that they didn't stay up very well on DS2, as he is a skinny thing but pisses like a racehorse.

Have you asked your HV for a referral to wheelchair services? You should be entitled to a free pram, Maclaren Major Elite, designed for children with SN, and I believe they hold up to 50kg. Very sturdy, built like a tank, but easy to push larger children in.

feelingbetter · 03/09/2009 21:45

Oh no Reiver - DS still only 14 months, but is a big fella and the Tesco ones are the only ones that fit him well and don't leak. What a buggar, why do they insist on changing things?

reiver · 03/09/2009 23:09

Depends on your DS's shape, feeling better. The nappies seem to be the same length but not so generous around the waist, even though the sides tabs are stretchier. Good luck!

Thanks for all your replies. Will have a look for a stroller at weekend (should hve said cannot be too big as need for public transport). He currently weighs 3st 4lbs too! We prob need a size 7-8 nappy if there is such a thing as he currently has marks on his sides from the 6's. Have tried Tesco and Lidl brands but didnt make any difference.

Speak to your HV they may be able to refer you to the incontinence service who can provide larger nappies for you. What about trying the smallest adult tena nappy you can find (will be expensive though).

What about asking OT about referral to Wheelchair service?

The maclaren major is probably the best option if you need something light weight and suitable for a bigger child. I can also recommend phil and teds for bigger children.

weegiemum · 04/09/2009 14:05

I too would ask for an OT referral about mobility. We have a Maclaren Major for dd2 (almost 6, though small-ish for her age) and it folds up nice and small for getting on/off buses (I'm a non-driver). Its pretty easy to push and i can hang a huge amount of shopping on the handles!!

I don't know much about the nappies but I do have a friend who got a referral to the incontinence people when her ds was still in nappies at a certain age, but for the life of me I can't remember what that age was!

Mitchell81 · 04/09/2009 14:09

I know some areas are different for what age they will supply nappies, where we are its 3.

Marne · 04/09/2009 16:09

Hi, we are trying to get a SN buggy (major) for dd2, she's only 3 but is heavy and we are getting through a lot of strollers, you might be able to get a Major through your sons pead or OT, i think it can take a while though.

You should also be able to get nappies through your HV or incontinence people, i think you can get 5 nappies a day for free (this might depend what area you are in).

Dd wears Huggies little walkers in a 6 as normal nappies make her sides soar.

Marne · 04/09/2009 16:16

Just seen that he's only 3.3, i don't think you can get nappies for free until they are 4.

As for a buggy, we use a Jane slalom ,we have the older one (not pro) and i can fit my 5.5 year old in it, its bulky but really easy to push, we also have a Maclaren triumph but i'm not sure how long it will last, i only use it if i'm going to the shops, i tend to use the jane more.

Glitterknickaz · 04/09/2009 17:39

I got a maclaren major from OT wheelchair service when DS was 3 years old and too heavy for most regular strollers, referal via HV.

Debs75 · 04/09/2009 18:03

We get nappies but you have to be over 4 and you only get 4 a day but can push for more.
DS was in drynites for ages and they are good but after a while you notice they don't hold a lot of wee so you are changing them a lot. Asda and Morrisons are doing an offer on them at the mo.
We now use Euron Form through the nappy service the website is www.euron-info.com

5inthebed · 04/09/2009 19:41

I'm currently not using my Mac Major if anyone wants to borrow it? I live in the north east, but could wrap it up for courier (at your cost there and back).

pushkar · 04/09/2009 20:24

the school nurse or health visitor can arrange for libero up and go nappies size 6 up to adult size. ask one of them they will come and measure your child and then the services department will deliver them it can take a while 2months... mean while dry nites seem to help

we had the major buggy[mcclaren] ordered by the physiotherpy department they are quite heavy and cumbersome occupational therapist should be able to iorder this item as well

they can also help with home desks bath rails loo seats but you have to push for them

feelingbetter · 05/09/2009 17:51

Yes, depends on the area - its 3 here.

We've just been referred for a McMajor too. DS is very tall but OK in his buggy at mo, but waiting list is at least 3 months before initial assessment here. Gawd only knows how big he'll be by the time it comes!

overthebar · 08/09/2009 10:58

Thanks for your replies. 5inthebed big thank you for your offer but we have borrowed one from our neighbour to use until we buy one. He would prob break it anyway!
