Well saw CAHMS again today and he is going to recommend to the (new) peadiatrician that DS has the ADOS. What is the process & method for this diagnosis test? Am rushing off to work be back later tonight, thanks!

Hi

My DS1 had the ADOS at the children's centre in Chelmsford (think you're in Essex?).

There was a SALT and an OT who played with DS1 and I sat with the Paediatrician (in the same room) answering questions from pregnancy to current day.

DS1 had a whale of a time. Seriously, he spent most of the time laughing. It was all play based and not the least stressful for him. We were sent off for half an hour and called back once they'd conferred and we were given a diagnosis of ASD. (He had also been observed at preschool by a SALT and at home a few times so those reports were taken into account too).

The Paediatrician said it was subtle but he did meet the triad of impairments and that a few years ago they wouldn't have been able to pick it up at the age he was then (3.2) and would probably have been more school-aged.

i am an ados tester. at your sons age it will be playing with bubbles/balloons/pop up toys, cause and effect toys and looking at how he engages with the toys and others in the room.
should take about an hour to do the test although it is a play situation, there is no right or wrong. we see parents a week later to give the results. it is good and it works.
let us know how u get on.

Hi sorry to hijack the thread but what just wondering if littlemisschatalot would advise me on something. My ds done the ados a year ago and the outcome was he had autistic traits, his developmental delay is so significant and his SPD is underestimated. To cut a long story short he is still no further forward and not getting any help for any of his probs for which there is a long list. The ados examiner didn't want to give him a dx of any type of pdd/asd and the OT don't want to dx him with spd. Where or what do I do from here? ds has DS, mobility issues, seziures, visual processing disorder as well sight and hearing probs, sleep apnea, heart condition etc. I was also told at the ados assessment he also had traits of adhd/add/odd/ocd and aspergers? cheers for any advice anyway.

It's a good test, but usually has a bit of a waiting list as it's used to dx ASD and is seen as the gold standard in doing this. This proves that they are taking your concerns very seriously so it is a positive thing that they have recommended this. J had it and it was very revealing about the things he found difficult.

Yes I am in Essex, notfromaroundhere so expect we will be at the same place you were!

I am so relieved he is going to get it. Finally at least it is being acknowledged.

Thanks for the info!

HIDTL, I am grining from ear to ear reading that your DS is getting an ADOS . I am so glad you are getting somewhere! Looks like changing hospitals was for the better.

DS2 had various tests before his ADOS, and we were told about 30mins/hour later of his DX. We were left in a room afterwards while the professionals all went and discussed the results.

Good luck with it!

thank you 5inthebed! It is a huge breakthrough isnt it!!!! SOMETHING IS HAPPENING!!!

I am a little worried DS's problems wont show up on the test but I am sure they account for these things and I am just praying it shows them what I see every day!

HIDTL, DS2 was perfect during his ADOS, and I thought they were going to come back and tell me to stop being so paranoid. And, well, you know the end to this story. Don't worry about how he is going to behave, thats for the professionals to worry about.

Is the Paediatrician you are being referred to Dr B?

I honestly thought we'd be sent away with a wait and see/too borderline to diagnose (which is what the community Paed had told me.

The waiting list for the ADOS was quite short (although that was last year). The referral process was somewhat of a palava - the SALT recommended I get one, had to be the GP or the Community Paed. Got the GP to do it and thought no more of it. Had a community paed. appt a month later and they phoned the Children's centre and found the referral hadn't been received. Got the GP to send it again by fax and it still didn't get there. The community Paed's. referral did make it through. They have some kind of panel where they review the referrals in one go but the wait wasn't too long for that. I got a phone call offering us the ADOS and the wait was only about 8 weeks I think.

So as always, chase up to make sure the referral has got through!

Hope you hear from them soon.

hereidrawtheline · 31/07/2009 10:26

the pead we have filed a complaint against is a female Dr. B.

We havent met the new pead yet. I think it is a Dr. S.

I do not want to hear about crappy referral processes I swear I think they must be a circle of hell!

my son has just had another s&l assessment and is being referred for ados at chelmsford moulsham centre was just looking at this thread as it answered so e concerns about what to expect but also was wondering if anyone had any idea how long the wait is for the ados assessment? x

babiki · 08/09/2014 20:33

We have waited about 3 months and got result straight after the assesment.

Don't expect much post-diagnoses though, in this area the support for children with autism is ... let's say poor.

abbiben1 · 08/09/2014 22:02

thank you babiki, did you have the assessment in chelmsford? x

babiki · 09/09/2014 09:33

Yes we did, about year and a half ago.
