Odd posture in asd kids??? What does it mean?

A question... could someone describe that famous asd odd posture i keep reading about?

My ds who is 3 1/2y. has good muscle tone, wasn't late for walking,... the paed who said he has asd reckons he has good gross/fine motor skills for his age.

He is not very good with dressing/undressing , eating cleanly, or putting his train track together ,...

I think he has an odd way of walking sometimes , not self assure like other kids, he often has his head looking down or to the side a little and he always does odd things with his hands like twiddling his belt or bottom of t-shirt or holding them in a quirky way it's hard to describe also when he runs he is so funny, he runs just like Mr. Bean. He tends to catch his feet to gether or into things and falls over fairly often.

Is that what is meant by asd odd posture do you think?

Had a meeting with senco at nursery , she thinks ds has problems with visual space awareness. She mentions he bumps and crashes into things regularly especially in the playground when there are lots of children running about.

you should try to get him in with a developmental/behavioral optometrist. Look on the BABO website.

Ds1 looks a bit like the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz film when he runs. Very floppy and bendy and lots of falling over. He's had a lot of OT over the years and so his co-ordination is actually much better than it used to be. He still crashes into things a fair bit though.

ooh wierd you should mention the primitive reflexes thing - after the incident of the 'sacral dimple' on DS5, and finding out it could be mild spina bifida: i looked up reflexes to see wether or not his worked OK, and much to my amazement he still has many baby ones he should have grown out of. perhaps there are a lot of our ASD kids with this problem as mentioned.

DS5 has a very strange gait. its all lop sided, and yes, he also has hypermobility. He looks like he only learnt to walk a few weeks ago, and hes been walking for nearly 2yrs now. He doesnt run yet.

We got appt with OT on Friday morning

oh, and the hand mirroring thing, DS5 does that too.
