so, if the school look blank when asked about DS2 being referred for OT, and the GP has NO IDEA how to refer..[hmm]....where do I contact now???

following on from this thread yesterday, I had the GP this morning..............school wasn;t seen as the right lady is out of the office, altho when I did query who I see with regards to OT, they !

anyhoo.........GP is referring for his hearing, plus another unrelated medical issue, but when I broached the psychological assessment recommendations regarding his processing issues and fine motor skills being extremely poor and so needing an OT imput, she looked a tad blank.

she seems to not know how and who to contact. she is going to contact the hospital to see what they say (so she is not completely useless), but when school looks blank, GP looks even more so, my confidence in DS2 getting the right help is plummeting.

for his dyslexia needs, I know the school is fab..........they have helped DD2 and are in the process with DS1, but for all the other issues with DS2, all I feel like doing is going

Could you contact the local paedriatric Occupational therapy dept yourself and ask them how to get the referral?

Does he have a paediatrician? We got ours through her.

well, he did, but she has retired as she has terminal cancer, her replacement died of a heart attack, and so we are in limbo now...hence me having to go thru the GP.

I suppose at a push I could contact the psychology team again, but they are in southampton and only really were there for the assessment, not the recommendation IYGWIM.

he is being referred to another paed for his medical prob (needs to be circumsised I think), but assuming that is not the right type of paed to ask about this??

It might be worth asking the psych team about it. They suggested dyslexia and the OT could assess for that. Ours did anyway.

GPs are useless, hope you get another paed soon.

tis a pain......the assess, make recommendations, but don;t tell you how to carry out those recommendations. feel like I am floundering in the dark with all this!!

agree with chops about phoning up OT yourself and asking what to do? you never know, maybe they will accept referrals direct from parents, I suspect not, but worth a go. GP doesn't sound v. impressive, as surely his job to find out how to do the referral rather than just look blank!

but thats the thing totalchaos, I don;t know of any OT's.

am going to try the psych place on monday, but that is assuming they pick up the damn phone, as they don;t (witnessed while waiting for the report which was supposed to take 2wks, took 8 in the end, and yet at no point did anyone return my messages asking where it might be!!)

just popping in to say that I have an appointment with the senco lady at the junior school he is going to sept, she is going to fill out a CAHMs with me, and also refer him to a paed (apparently she can do that on the basis of the report and the fact that I am in limbo without one right now), and she said that is the way to go for the ref for OT.

here's hoping all goes as she thinks, which is easy, if a bit of a wait.

tis just so tedious, not knowing where to go, and no-one really being able to answer all my questions.

oh, forgot to say, the psych that evaluated DS2....she left, we were her last case, so now to get anyone to go thru it all with me means a whole new person

its all swings and roundabouts im so fed up with the constant chasing and people not knowing or not doing what they should

I am beginning to find that.

it was bad enough when I was trying to get DD2s dyslexia DX'd, and the constant chasing then was bad enough, but this is all so new.

what makes me so tho is that they recommend OT and immediate intervention, but don;t tell you how to get said intervention set up, or how to go about getting the OT.....and then the GP doesn;t know either. surely by now there have been enough children in the country DX'd with certain conditions etc that they would have worked out a proper plan for next step per issue etc.

i think its an area thing also some things are so easy in some areas and like digging for gold in others

our specialist pre school teacher have referred us to ot easy as that and other things we cant get others have just been given it really is hard isnt it
