is awkward to organise and does it upset anyone?

I have just had my new award through from the DLA and I have two years left so i can apply for a motability car, which i am going to do But we live in a terraced house in a restricted parking area and I have no idea how I will cope getting both the kids out of the car, plus shopping or whatever and walking back to my house. i think the easiest solution would be to get a disabled bay put outside. I am just a bit wary of upsetting anyone, just wondered if anyone else had done this, how it worked and whther it all went smoothly

Oops, Only way I would get into any clubs round here at my great age and girth!

anniebear · 13/05/2005 12:29

We live in a narrow one way street and we got one no problem.

They wrote to about five of the neighbours,(next door and opposite) to see if there were any objections.

It took a while though

Fio2 · 13/05/2005 12:45

gosh thank you everyone I will ring the council. i have a feeling my neighbour will complain as she is very good at that, thats why i was in two minds. husband says I am too soft.

Easy i am not worried about applying for a motability car, i am worried about driving again WATCH OUT EVERYONE, hehe

So is the Ford Focus C Max a bit like, the scenic and the xzara? My husband is dead against the idea of me having one of these or a people carrier but I like to pee him off and the car is mine

Fio, the motability{http://www.motabilityonline.co.uk/site/current_prices/contract_hire/specials/specials.htm/list is here}. It isn't fully comprehensive tho', so look at the manufacturers websites too. Ford Magic are very helpful.

It includes all the best deals. Not many automatics that don't need an advance payment tho'.

I drive an automatic, and have chosen an auto Astra this time round. Vauxhall lent me one for 3 days to make sure I like it (can't get demos on automatics thru dealers easily however), and I've decided to have an estate this time, which will cost me £14 advance payment.

Easy · 13/05/2005 13:11

Sorry, the link doesn't work cos it includes underscores.

try cutting and pasting this into the search bar, replace the number 5s with underscores.

I am having a bad day.

Should get back to work.

The c-max is like the normal Focus but higher up and with more moveable seats and bigger boot space.
I don't know about the other makes, I presume they will all be similar, but each Ford dealership has a Motability specialist who you can go and speak to, ask questions, arrange test drives etc.
I used to have an Audi TT and dh currently has a 2-door sporty BMW and both were/are a nightmare for getting dd in and out. I know the mpv type vehicles aren't as stylish or anything but unfortunately when you need a Motability vehicle it has to be practicality over style!

sparklymieow · 13/05/2005 13:42

I have a partnet combi, and tBH, its ugly but its what we needed, space in the bed for three seats and huge boot space for wheelchair and major buggy

JakB · 13/05/2005 15:17

I've been thinking about this as sometimes have to park miles away and can be very interesting trying to get DD back to the house!
But as I can't reverse park I won't be able to get into the bloody space! Which will wind the neighbours up no end...

Easy · 13/05/2005 15:22

Why do sooo many people have trouble with reverse parking?

Find out where your local Institute of Advanced motorists meet, and join. You'll learn how to reverse park, and if you go on to get a IAM certificate, you'll get discounts on your motor insurance (cos you'll be a safer driver).

If we go into the city centre, I have to drive, becos dh is rubbish at reverse parking too. I think it's easy peasy !!!

heartinthecountry · 13/05/2005 15:24

I can reverse park......

as long as the space is about 3 cars long .

JakB · 13/05/2005 15:24

Wish I found it so easy, Easy! I could reverse park the Ford Focus I learnt in with no problems at all. But can't park the Vauxhall Zafira at all. Dunno what it is. End up at the wrong angle and give up

Easy · 13/05/2005 15:28

Sorry if that sounded patronising, it wasn't meant to.

Honestly, either pay a driving school for a lesson (in your own car) or join IAM (it's only a small fee I think, wasn't much a few years ago). It isn't worth getting worried about parking, when you can learn how to do it quite simply.

JakB · 13/05/2005 16:25

Didn't sound patronising at all! I can't believe I can't do it. And I've had a lesson with my old driving instructor in my car and I still can't do it. Will look up the IAM...

Davros · 13/05/2005 18:51

I can reverse park, case of having to and lots of practice. You all know that old joke? Why can't women park? Because men keep telling them "this" (finger and thumb VERY close together) is 6 inches

onlyjoking9329 · 13/05/2005 22:37

it is very hard to find a big auto with no advance payments thou we looked at load and think the senic and a couple of other mpv's were 2 thousand advance payment we ended up with a nissan almera which i use a lot but if we are all going out we have to use the 7 seater spacewagon.

We were worried about our neighbours objecting when asked about the parking space, although we get on with them all!!

So I wrote a short letter with my application form and said the reasons we were applying was because of the neighbours all constantly parking works vans outside our housing, knowing we have a SN child.

Just in case anyone complained!!

May be worth doing that
