my ds 11 has just been put on a list to be assessed for aspergers but the waiting list is about 12 months

hi my ds 11 seen camhs on monday and they put him on the list to be assessed for aspergers but she said it is a bout 12months waiting list does anyone know how much it is to get him assessed privately.he is currently home educated due to his social problems,any advice would be appreciated thanks in advance

Hmmm, it varies per area io think.

Best bet would be to call the Natinal Autistic Society for a list of recommended assessors, I know someone who used to be on here got an assessment that way.

Is it a formal DX you want or help? Just- an LEA will often refuse to accept a private assessment anyhow. If it's help you need, you might find a charity such as BIBIC can identify all your ds's needs without actually asssigning a DX 9the route we took prior to ds1's dx with AS / HFA).

Does it help in any way to know that 12 months is six months less than we waited 4 years ago?

hi bubblegirl.peachy,im not sure what i want camhs said they think he should get assessed i tried to get him assessed and they said he was too bright to get assessed for sen,but he def has some social problems he will need support to go back to school as he suffers with anxiety and migraines.will ring the autistic society thanks and i will also look into bibic

It varies greatly, but you are looking somewhere in the region of £1000+ - it's not cheap!

As peachy said be careful, as LEA's often refuse to accept private DX's.

If (on the off chance) you have BUPA they will fund the intial DX but not any further treatment.

Are you looking for your son to go back to school?

We waited over 18 months for DS's DX.

could it be more gifted and talented than aspergers if his too bright? social problems can also be related to this and quite often very similar behaviors to ASD

i think you need to see if you can get assessment i dont know enough to help you with that but it would enable him more help and would at least know where he stands especially in school

Whilst high IQ prevents a dx of autism
there are a great many graduates and PHd holders with Aspergers. Some beleive this includes Einstein.

OK, I would start with the triad of impairments on the NAS site- that's the best way to work out in your head if it's likely to be AS (D). My suggestion at this stage is that you wait for the NHS dx but get either a BIBIC assessment or see a private Ed Psych to look at actually helping your ds- the two are not exclusive. BIBIC have a website (british institute for brain damaged children but don't be put off by the name, they start with dyslexia and work upwards. no dx is needed and you get a free phone assessment to see if they can help, they can also get in a sALT or Ed PSych if you choose).

The way they work is a 2 days or 3 days assessment to work out whicha reas your child struggles with and provide ways to help, in many ways as useful as a DX, and our assessment got us a statement.

thanks for that peachy will go on there now did u have to pay for the assessment,i got the letter from the lea saying the school could help him(but hes not at school)i rang them and they said i didnt have enough evidence and because he missed 8 m onths of school and still got 5s in his sats they said he doesnt have sen.He has always had socialisation problems never had a best friend finds it very hard to make and keep friends and suffers badly with anxiety.He also is on medication for constipation,has lots of migraines and has sleeping problems,and low self esteem.

Also BIBIC- they do charge but it's less than a private DX and you can pay monthly, also they do cut rates etc for low income famillies as they are a charity,a nd they can help you fundraise towards it as well. You need to start by phoning for an advice pack.

i just took my son to a private clinic with a clinical pyschiatrist and she said my son has ASD, it cost £250, follow up sessions to try and lower his severe anxiety would be about £100 per go. my ex paid for the initial apt fortunately.

i wont even mention camhs as their report i got today said they would teach me how to do a star chart??! for his behaviours and the fact my gp slated camhs in our area then i will be avoiding them in the future

have just found out the health insurance we have covers this so need a clinical phychologist in surrey/london area any ideas anyone

bigdonna - I am in the process of having my son (3.0) assessed privately for ASD as NHS waiting list is a year. The consultant I saw has given me a list of clinical phychologists which she recommended and they are all in the Kingston/Surrey area. I am at work at the moment but can send you her recommendations when I get home if you like/if the area suits.

thay would be brilliant camhs have just put my son on the waiting list yes mine is a yr long too.my ds is 11 they think he is slightly aspergers.thanks so much.
