DS had a salt assesment when he was just gone 2 years old. They didn't pick up any ASD because after being shown a couple of times 'how to feed dolly' and several prompts ,he eventualy did pretend to feed dolly. At the time he only spoke a few words , and LOTS of gibberish, he could follow very simple commands if and when he was in the mood. So 7 months later he had 6 sessions of SALT (30 mins per session) to learn to take turn alongside 2 other kids (one of which was distracting ds with his constant screetching). After that the SAL Therapist said ds had made progress!?? Now nearly 10 months down the line we are still waiting for the next lot of SALT sessions, We were told before Xmas, then by April , then in May, ...we have phoned them up countless number of times, finally we get a reply because they have received the report from the paed about possible ASD. The SALT people are up in arms saying that the paed shoudn't have mentioned ASD , and that the SAL Therapist is used to working and assessing ASD kids, so that she couln't have missed any signs regarding my ds!
I'm livid to say the least. My ds is so behind with his speech and understanding of language,he still uses lots of gibberish and he clearly shows some ASD traits albeit mild ones .The SALT have not seen him in nearly 10 months and they said no to another more up to date assessment, and of course the final straw they do not agree with the paed and the nursery SENCO who saw my ds. What is going on! I feel like we have taken a step backwards.
Sorry for the rant.

It is frustrating, we're going through similar. I got the number of the manager and pestered until I got an answer on when we'd get more SALT. Do you have a SENCO for your ds?

mysonben · 28/05/2009 23:13

Yes DS has a SENCO at his nursery (he made a visual timetable for ds) but the SENCO only visits every now and then , it was the paed who wrote to the SENCO to ask for observations about ds.

Please then make a formal complaint through appropriate channels and through SNAP.
It's the only way your concerns will be addressed seriously.
(I'm a salt btw.)

Well, complain about the mto their superiors and cc it to their superiors. Also log it with SNAP, your community health council and MP. Also contact the local paper.

Have you done this? (I know we have discussed it before.)

I'm very sorry to hear that.
I know how draining it is for people like you.

I can assure you though that if you summed up the energy, things would change.
Chjarities like AFASIC and ICAN (who campaign on behalf of speech impaired children) could help you with this.
