I was just reading the thread about speech regression and it's rung a more general bell with me - wondered what anyone else thought. My son (ASD, will be four next month) is having/being a mare this week. At the weekend he started getting all "chewy" and chewed up a t.shirt and then the other day he chewed up a mouse-mat! He slept for an hour and a half at nursery yesterday, he's had loads of wee accidents and he just pooed in his pants (and I though we'd left that behind a couple of months ago). Thing is tho' when his early years autism woman was round the other day he was brilliant for the first 15 mins, he was doing numbers and colours (I'd told her he could do it but I'm not sure she'd believed me up to then 'cos he doesn't do it to order) then when choosing he said "I want that one there" and he rarely puts two words together usually. After that he went off the rails and started running around, jumping on the furniture and standing on his head and normally he's quite happy to play with this woman. I've got the feeling (or maybe I'm just trying to convince myself!) that he's actually taking a bit of a developmental step up and that's behind his erratic behaviour. Do you think this could be the case or am I just wilfully delusional?

It sounds as if there is definitely real progress with language though whether it's related to behaviour is hard to say. We are getting more verbal 'pop outs' too like 'these ones' or 'do this one' which seem to come from no where - they are not taught or echolalic i mean. At the hospital therapy program they have told us that DS1 sometimes runs around the room as a way of tuning the therapist out so that he does not have to concentrate or work. They mean it is a deliberate tactic that is not just random running so it could be seen as progress (of a sort)

Thanks for that - it's weird with this sort of random progress (language) 'cos some times I end up wondering if I imagined it when he doesn't "follow-up" . At least he stayed awake for nursery today and we'll see how he does with his early years therapist tomorrow.
