Are all Portage workers supposed to be positive?

Our Portage worker is lovely and has helped me so much, and I dont have a bad word to say about her! We have seen her for 4 sessions now and she is currently doing an assessment and is going to nursery with Fraser next week.

But im sat wondering whether she is being so positive because everythinh is positive, or whether she is trying to make me less worried IYSWIM? She seems to gloss over the bad points.

Are they supposed to only tell you the positives, or am I being too negative?

my portage lady is really nice even when ds kicked her in the head when he was having a very bad day

Frasersmum123 this woman would come round once a week, she was new and didn't have a clue, she would thne try and get dd to do imposible things that no child with athetoid cp could ever do, it was depressing.

2shoes, it sounds like your portage worker hadn't been set up properly - the exercises are supposed to be designed for the specific child!

Our portage worker is also fabby. Have felt at times that she's the only one out of all the "professionals" who can see what ds2 is capable of. It's been a breath of fresh air.

DD's portage worker is realistic, rather than super-positive all the time, but there's a colleague who's like a children's tv presenter on speed. Endearing, but in an exhausting way!

I think it's partly because they are coming from an educational perspective and see the child more holistically than clinical staff.

our portage worker is lovely too - very realistic, but extremely positive. SHe always looks pleased to see DS5, and she gives the impression that she likes him the best... but ive seen her do it to other families, but its nice anyway.

She will also be helping with statementing and funding for nursery.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 21/05/2009 08:25

2shoes- ours was not that great either

I have heard of stories of portage workers being really negative so I think positive is better!

Frasersmum123 · 21/05/2009 09:39

I definately think positive is better, and thanks everyone for your thoughts.

I suppose I have really trying to judge how she is thinking - she is doing an assessment to try and find out if Fraser would benefit from Portage, and she will do a report in a couple of weeks. I get a bit nervous that she is so positive because I think she will say that she they wont help him, when I can see how he is benefitting iyswim. I suppose I also come across as a very worried parent and she maybe trying to reassure me.

She did say his speech and cognitive skills are delayed, but thinks the rest are about where they should be.
