A friend of mine swears by both the Listening Programme and also Fast for word , a computer program. I'm no expert on either, but she reckons they have siginficantly helped her DS with auditory problems.

interesting to know.

I also thought of checking into Therapeutic Listening. You really just need to get a workup with an Occupational Therapist to know for sure what's going on.

We are coming to the end of a 14 week Therapeutic Listening program. DD2's main problem was auditory processing, with visual being a close second. She has improved massively, Very occasionally now does she get upset by an unexpected noise, or strange noise and she now reacts much much quicker to a request whereas before you would ask her something and there would be no response, and I'd always think she hadn't understood but I now realise she had she just needed much longer to process the information.

I don't have any experience of the other listening programs but there are lots of things to try.

Would love to know how you get on TC, keep me posted.

Our next hurdle will be to see how many of her news skills she retains after finishing the program. Fingers crossed!

Ladies - a quick couple of questions - how did you establish/get a diagnosis of APD, and what made led you to suspect it in the first place?
I have a dd who is bright, fantastic at reading, doing well at school, but something just isn't right with how her brain works, so am looking for ideas. I haven't been to a GP or anything because she is doing well, it is hard to make a case that something odd is going on...

Kazann, if you go to www.vitallinks.net (don't know how to do links I'm afraid ) this is the site our OT told me to look at before we started.

It's meant to be a 12 week program (ours has been longer due to a couple of ear infections and we had to do an extra week of one cd as we went on holiday for 2 weeks). DD2 is under 2 so she has hers done through speakers, but if a child is over 2 they wear headphones and have to listen to a cd twice a day for 30 minutes with at least a 3 hour break between sessions. You have to keep a diary of any pros and cons that you notice then the OT decides which cd she should have next. If there are really bad negatives a cd might be changed part way through the fortnight but this is why the OT keeps such close tabs on you. There is some dis-regulation in the early cd's where the sensory system dis-regulates before it re-regulates again but as the weeks go on it gets less and less. Having said that every child reacts differently so it may not apply to yours.

Wellingtonbooze, DD2 has GDD and SPD, originally she was severely tactile defensive but this is now ok, she had a sensory assessment done and this showed that auditory processing was her biggest problem. The Audiologist is now on board with this too and is monitoring DD2. HTH
