How can I find out where to move to in the UK (ASD related)?

Some of you might know that I live in Sweden (I'm english, my H is swedish).

For various reasons, I'm not coping and am thinking about moving back to the UK.

My son has autism and I'm trying to look into areas of the country which might have strengths in terms of autism or ASD support services. His condition presents itself very mildly, and I'm not sure that the health system would accept his swedish diagnosis without wanting to assess him themselves first, so obviously I'm thinking about length of waiting lists for diagnoses as well as interim interventions.

Any ideas as to where I could start looking to research this? Any other forums etc which might be a good starting point?

Any ideas are very welcome. I'm stuck.

Pagwatch - we take dd1 to Challengers in Ewell sometimes. She loves it.

Experiences in most of the Northeast are good, as far as I know. I'm in Co Durham and while there have been frustrating moments, particularly with OT, things have gone pretty smoothly on both the medical and educational side. Even getting acceptable (not perfect, but acceptable) statements for both of my boys has been relatively painless.

I'm on Cambs / Suffolk border, but fall under Cambridgeshire services, but know quite a few people under Suffolk services. Everyone thinks Suffolk social services are terrible compared to Cambs but I think are reasonably happy with other stuff though I haven't heard it's particularly exceptional. Cambridgeshire isn't too bad - it has quite short waiting times for assessment, but we had to wait a long time for SALT and OT was practically non-existent. I believe there is a specialist unit for Aspergers children in Linton. I think it can vary so much even within counties that it is hard to judge. In some ways you might be better to be very specific about which schools / services you require rather than just a general reputation.

Btw Suffolk is about as far away from Wales as you can get - other side of the country .

sorry for hijack.....
rosie: we cant have autism outreach help (do you use same one as me where main person has initials GT?) as despite DS having autism because he is at a private school (only one within 30 mins from home that can cope with ASD so no real choice there!) so because he is in private we dont qualify for help! we are having to muddle through on our own as have had no support off CAMHS at all.

Yes should of said, i'm Suffolk coastal region. Other areas are not so good.
Our Paed is based at Ipswich hospital & is great but have a friend who lives between Bury & Newmarket & has a nightmare accessing support..

DS2 has had wonderful OT including Sensory therapy, hydro, Physio etc.
We are half way between Ipswich & Lowestoft & seem to get good provision.

Bonkerz, i think autism outreach is the same as the one we use i didn't realise you had to be at an LEA school to receive the service it seems very unfair, surely a child with ASD is a child with ASD regardless of wher they go to school, we have had no support off CAMHS but there again didn't really want it, at least you can be confident in your sons priory school they have such a good reputation, but isn't it disgusting that you've had such a hard fight because of the area that you live in.

BONKERZ · 14/05/2009 20:49

my point exactly rosie, my son has asd 24/7 not just when he is at school and the reason he is at the priory is because there is nowhere else near so decision was not really ours it was necessary. the school cant help me at home!

'Btw Suffolk is about as far away from Wales as you can get - other side of the country .'

Hahahaha - yes, one of them is east and the other one west isn't it? I dropped geography in favour of history at school...
