Aged 10

"is this a dog?'

He indicates yes/no on his VOCA

We have been trying for years.

He's finally 'got it'

I've had a few being busy

I remember when NT ds2 and ds3 developed a sensible yes and no - how useful it was because you could do the guessing game to find out what they were on about even if their speech didn't support it.

Have to say the Boardmaker Activity Pad has really brought ds1's communication on (more than I expected). He is MUCH more motivated to use it than PECS (maybe he doesn't have to scan so much as the communication sheets remain static - and he gets voice feedback).

Oh Wow.

Did he just suddenly get it? or was there some sort of run-up? Can't imagine it ever happening here, atm.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 11/05/2009 22:39

TBH I haven't tried for a while. It was on his Growing Minds IEP and -nothing at the time - no concept at all. And repeated trials got us nowhere, so I stopped. I would try every now and then. Nothing.

We have had a couple of new girls start with him recently and one asked today whether he was saying yes & no, which reminded me to try. I'd already set up Yes and No on the Boardmaker Activity Pad, so decided to try it on there. Got it straight away.

So it must have come sometime in the gap between me trying.

That is brilliant

Was he pleased? Did he see it as an achievement, iyswim?

Deeeja · 11/05/2009 22:58

That is fantastic!

moondog · 11/05/2009 23:08

Wonderful, wonderful news!!

bullet123 · 11/05/2009 23:20

Congratulations to him .

saintlydamemrsturnip · 11/05/2009 23:22

He looked a bit non-plussed by my cheers, but was happy to continue for a while. It was something I thought he'd never get so am very content tonight.

I wonder how long it will take him to start doing toddler like no's on his Boardmaker Activity Pad. I promise to celebrate rather than get cross if it happens.

Absolutely brilliant!! ( ds is verbal but still mixes these words up on occasion) Ah yes I suppose the next step is the power of the word no!!

DS2 has 'no' and a much more shaky 'yes' for things he wants and doesn't want (usually have to prompt 'yes'as he just repeats the name of the item) but he can't do yes and no in answer to ' Is this a ?' question.
