There is a new assisted communication device called LAMP. I think it may still be in the early stages but the lecture I saw in March looked really promising.

do they allow them to bring it home or does it have to stay at school,I am figuring lea will say no as he can use makton in his own form but can see that leading to frustrations as he cant sign everything he wants to say and not fast enough

DS2 has just been assesed for one, and during the assesment the one that he tried had the pecs pictures on it. It was great, although a little basic for him but it was just the one that they use to see if the children would get the hang of it.

He will be getting some sort of dynamo (I think it sounds like a lawn mower!) machine which we can upload new software onto for him as his language and literacy skills increase. We were told that we would have to add it our household insurance in order for him to bring it home, but thats easily done.

I'm really excited about it for him, he is ready now to move on to the next stage, just awaiting funding approval.

Phoenix4725 · 09/05/2009 07:57

going speak to ds salt though feeling she not be keen as she is makton teacher as well tahts what she likes to use and yes it works for him but does mean someone has to interupt for him and his signs are slightly dodgy

slightlycrumpled how old is your ds and was it salt that arranged for assessment for him

He is 5 so in reception at school. It was the SALT who arranged everything, she bought another SALT along with her that specialises in communication aids and they did it all at school.

SALT then told us that they would write a letter to school asking them to apply to LEA for funding. They did say that they have never known the request be turned down, (they obviously don't apply very often!) so I am hopeful.

Don't be put off because your SALT recommends makaton, so does ours and I'm glad it has been lifechanging for us. She told me that he will still need to carry on signing and more importantly to carry on speaking alongside using the device. DS2 has a hearing impairment and a type of cleft palate.

How old is your DS?

ds has global delay Sli, hypertonia and hypermoblitly and mld

It's a very worrying time isn't it just before they start school? I was a nightmare this time last year.

DS2 attends mainstream school with a full statement and they have on the whole been great. All staff went on a makaton course so they can all communicate with him on some form, with his 1:1 and class teacher obviously learning more. He took along his pecs booklet that had been made for him, and an 'all about me' book as well and so far they have served him well. It is time now for something else and in a way I regret not pursuing it last year.

Good luck with it.

Have you a diagnosis for him phoenix or is he a bundle of mystery? DS2 is also hypermobile and has hypotonia.

LOL at sqeaky wheel and JCB, I have a feeling that I am not the LEA's favourite person in the world! Oh well.

Phoenix4725 · 09/05/2009 08:45

just the gdd though we have seen neurolgist at Bibic recently and he feels it warrants further investigation to look where the damage is he feels be at the worse around area controlling speech as he is still only around 3-6 months verbal and 18 months receptive.
