school left him behind!

So flyingboy is on a school trip. They stop off at a sort of service station thing (not on a motorway - I can't seem to make out what was there) so people could go to the loo. He went to the loo. Came out. The bus had gone without him!!!

Fortunately another kid on the bus said 'where's flyingboy' and they turned round and got him so he was only left for a few minutes. There was 10 kids and about 8 staff.

We are spitting feathers. Flyingboy had a meltdown and I think told them in no uncertain terms what he thought of them (good).

You'd think it's not rocket science to do a role call. 10 kids. I've done school trips with 300 before now and not lost anyone!

OMG .

Mitchell81 · 08/05/2009 16:21

OMG how old is he? Imagine leaving a child behind. I would be furious aswell.

flyingmum · 08/05/2009 16:24

He's 14. He's not hard to miss - he's tall and ginger! They had been told not to take mobiles and no money so he had no way of contacting anyone. Fortunately they returned very quickly and he had the sense to stay put rather than start walking.

The more I think about it the worse it gets actually . .

flyingmum, hope you are ok. It is awful and as tclanger says, unforgiveable.

pagwatch · 08/05/2009 16:52

Ohpoor you Flyingmum. That must be such a fright for you.
How is he doing now?

allytjd · 08/05/2009 17:03

DS2 has been left at the library...twice, not as bad as it is next door to school but again, what is so difficult about doing a head count? My boys are tall and ginger too, does help to spot them when they run off without telling you where they are heading!

FabulousBakerGirl · 08/05/2009 17:05

Flipping heck! That had me nearly in tears at the thought of what coud have happened.

Have the school apologised?

Deeeja · 08/05/2009 17:08

That is awful
My worst nightmare!

I didn't know until the taxi driver told me (ahhhhhh). It was getting really late back from the school run yesterday and I was just about to phone the taxi driver when they turned up. I made a joke about flyingboy hopefully not leaving his backpack stuff (Duke of Edinburgh yomp hike thing) scattered across the countryside and the taxi driver said 'well as they left him behind' I could see DS was uptight and knew in that mummy way that something was up but thought the driver was joking. He wasn't and was incensed on our behalf. The people told him 'he really lost it' - I think they were worried DS would have a meltdown in the taxi but driver as have all his drivers seems to have with DS a mutual admiration society and said gruffly 'he'll be fine' and fortunatley he was.
They had phoned hubby who was in a meeting and only answered his phone cause he saw it was school but then couldn't phone me (although I am a bit pissed off with that because he never phoned me at all). Hubby sent stiffly worded letter and we have had grovelling reply today. I think they ought to apologise formally to my son - he's the one who suffered the stress.

Anyway he's fine but we are trying to get him to become a bit more independent like start walking to places on his own and I'm worried this might put him off. What worries me as well is that it was another child who noticed he wasn't there - not an adult. How long would it have taken? He's done school trips to France, Spain, Wales and various places in the UK and been fine. He's even not got lost or been left behined on a Dover to Calais ferry. Then it happens with 10 kids, 8 adults and a minibus. Still, the camping out worked out OK and he had a good time. The real thing is in three weeks time so they'd better have tightened things up by then or else.

The kitchen garden's looking good too that DS has created. The wolves are circling - better go feed them.

unfitmother · 08/05/2009 18:04

DS's taxi driver left him behind last Friday as DS told him DH was picking him up, he wasn't. It was a nasty shock, taxi driver didn't give a toss. I'm still
Hope your DS is OK.

flyingmum · 09/05/2009 19:55

Thank you for all your support. He's fine and seems fairly sanguine about it all. It doesn't seem to have put him off going on the next yomp.
