My lo had a salt assessment today and basically she is going to put him down as high priority.
She said he is vv difficult to understand he makes a lot of g and d sounds [she aid cos of dummy] but apparently is making other sounds too.
He is 3.7 and tbh lately he has been worrying lately about going to preschool saying things like but you tell them mummy what if they don't understand me.
But my worry is that we may be moving to kuwait within the next couple of months.
she said it could be up to 5 months before we see nayone but because she was going to high priority we may get seen within 8 weeks but she stressed thst it was highly unlikely.
Omg I feel like I have failed so miserably.

I could be wrong - I'm not any sort of speech expert - but I didn't think that dummies actually caused any huge problems, from the latest research. Children seem to speak in whatever ways that they can do at the time, and I'm not sure that you could have known to do anything differently?

Don't worry unduly (er, easier said than done, I suspect)

I'm sure that knowledgeable people will be along at any moment...

Dd2 was made prioity in october for SALT ,we saw one this week . Dd2 is also a dummy sucker and almost non-verbal but then again her sister had a dummy and doesn't shut up.

I agree with Amber - it has been proven that dummies do NOT affect speech in that way. children really just do speak around them. Of course its better to persuade them to remove them when speaking ("im sorry, i cant hear you with that dummy in" usually does it). TBH there sounds more going on than dealing with dummy issues, Im sorry i really dont know what as Im not any kind of expert either - but I have noticed that children on here who tend to speak using lots of "g" and "d" need a bit of assistance and its nothing to do with dummies so please dont feel guilty or a failure - after all, you have noticed something and are trying to find someone to help your son, and i dont think anyone could do anything more .

Moondog is a SALT on here - hopefully she might be on later.

Sorry but CANT agree with the dummy comment I dont care what research says just think sow yous speak if you have a pen or something in your mouth think how hard you are to understand.

thecloudhopper · 08/05/2009 19:13

I am sure most SALTS would agree with me and most teachers ect.

Iam, I don't really work with speech problems so can't comment.Vast majority resolve themselves though.
Cloud, yes and no.Of course a dummy or a pen impedes speech when in the mouth. No evidence to suggest it does long term thoguh.

If yuo can't hear someone properly who has a pan or a dummy in their mouth, as Miss says, just ask them to take it out.

Simple!
