Getting a school to take Aspergers seriously

Any advice would be much appreciated...
I have had a very bad experience with a nursery which my DS1 (who has aspergers) was at as they had specific speech and language facilities. Whilst there he was officially diagnosed, but the nursery were very unhelpful and told me that the problems I had with him were down to parenting issues. As the whole experience with DS1 had knocked any confidence out of me, this affected me quite negatively. I was lucky that he was only there for 1 year, and that the school he is in now is much more supportive. The other health professionals involved with DS1 had no reservations that it was Aspergers and did quietly voice some concerns about the school he was at and that I wasn't the first to experience this. I thought about complaining at the time, but didn't feel strong enough to take what they might throw at me.
Anyway, was at a local support group meeting last night when i heard three other families talking about a school that all their children go to. They were discussing how unsupportive the school is and how getting the school to take their childrens special needs seriously (All have ASD) is so difficult. Didn't take long to realise they were talking about the same school as the nursery my DS1 went to. We are going to have a meeting about what we can do about the situation.
Wondered if anyone had dealt with this issue before with a school, and what the best course of action is? Do we go straight to LEA or try and deal with it at the school?

In general i would say best to speak to school first. they need opportunity to hear concerns and answer them.

is your child at the school you are talking about>

no, he was only there for the nursery part. My DS is at a completely different school now. The school in question has primary and juniors too. From the sounds of it the Juniors is the worst and the parents who i spoke to yesterday are constantly trying to put their point across, but not feeling like they are getting anywhere.
