I'm asking on behalf of a friend whos son is going through the dx process.
He is due to have the ADOS doen next week & she is wondering what types of activities they will do.
She has read lots about the test but can't find any examples of the actual activities involved.
I can't help her as ds2 didn't have the ADOS done as part of his dx.

Thanks for your help I think she is getting a little worked up & knowing what to expect may help her be a little calmer about the whole process.

No probs. I thought it was a good test and J didn't find it too stressful - just ignored most of it!

DS2 tried to escape out the window for most of his ADOS (on the 2nd floor).

They pretty much tried to get him to play games, imaginary ones and games that involved him playing with another person. Nothing hard going.

Thanks 5, I will pass on the info, she's doing it all with no support & I think she feels a bit swamped at the moment.

Because he is very socialable she thinks they'll think shes mad (we've all had that feeling) & discharge him with no support.
She has had initial appnts but they want to do the ADOS.

We got a dx straight after the ADOS.I hope it isn't too long for her to get a DX for her DS.

OOh really that is good, I hate the waiting about for reports etc.
Did they give you a verbal dx & follow it up with something in writting?

My DS1 had the ADOS as part of his assessment. He had great fun and engaged well but we still came away with a DX of ASD. He was 3.2 and they did things like blowing up a balloon and letting it go, putting things slightly out of his reach and splitting up bubble toys (so one had the one the other had the solution) between the therapist to guage his reaction, imaginitive play, puzzles etc.

After they'd done the ADOS (I'd been giving the Paediatrician a history as well) we were sent off for half an hour then called back. A mum on the course I'm on who is under a different hospital wasn't given the results on the same day so I think it may vary from area to area. I did get a short report followed eventually by a longer one which gave details of it all.

Sorry, should have said that the "professionals" left for about half an hour then gave a verbal Dx and followed it all up in writting. Lots of pages long, and hard to read at first.

Thanks again.

my DS had the ados test, this came after i had been told there was nothing wrong with him and that at most he had odd. the ados showed he had autism! it is designed to pick up on the smaller more hidden aspects of autism i think.
