There is an Autism Bill which is trying to become law in the UK. The government want to ask people what we think about their plans and how life is for people or parents trying to cope with an ASD. That link takes you to a consultation paper you can fill out.

We've only just had the dx - can we still do it Amber?

amber32002 · 29/04/2009 15:27

Oh yes - I think everyone can

It says, "we want to hear the
ideas of as many people as possible to help decide and inform the right approach
for the final strategy" so I'd think that parents have every right to a say.

Be warned - I completed the on-line questionnaire page 1 and whn I tried to move to the next page it timed me out and I had to start again. Best to write your comments off-line and cut and paste them into the on-line document.

CANNOT BELIEVE - that EDUCATION was not a main theme in its own right. FFS! It's through eduction that kids are sent for dx, support provided, etc etc.

Faith isn't, either, despite it being on the basic human rights.

Thanks for this Amber.

Will have a proper look and think about what I want to say. AND I'll get DH to fill it in as well, not to mention the other parents I'm in contact with....

Does it count if you are fighting for diagnosis and this system is failing you at that point?

amber32002 · 03/05/2009 20:33

Oh yes, it does. Definitely.

this is for adults??

the bill is about services, and about 'counting' how many individuals have ASD.

i would love to see a bill/act that is all about education and not about the self fulfilling prophesy that chidren are going to 'need' services.

what a concept, give them individualised education and social communication skills and they might not need the services???

the bill is not very inspiring to me at all. and i dont see what its going to do for kids or adults on the spectrum.

frustratedmom · 03/05/2009 23:13

Never mind on the spectrum how about getting the diagnosis. Can't get help til diagnosed, but can't get diagnosed!

It is in theory for adults, but it gets the information in front of all the people who make the decisions for everyone - children, adults or otherwise. I'd copy the answers to your local MP too and ask for their comments. The wonders of democracy.

Adults need education every bit as much as the children do. Very often we're unable to progress through school to our full ability, so we do need to be able to continue to learn and achieve. I wish I could, but there's so little out there to help.
