Motability cars - are they good value for money?

My car has broken down again. In the past month I've paid out for 2 tyres, and need a third replaced. The spare wheel mecanism is broken, the windscreen has a chip in it, the rear lights array has a hole in it. Now the automatic transmission won't go into 3rd gear and I've jsut driven 5 miles home at 20mph.

Using ds1's dla for a car is looking more and more tempting. If the transmission on my car has failed I'm probably goign to have to, because looking at least £1k for the work.

He currently has jsut over 3 years to run on his current award, but I'm wondering if it does work out good value for money to use it for a car. Also what happens at the end of the three years. Can we keep the current car, or do we have to find another deposit for another car?

My biggest worry is if he doesnt get higher rate upon renewal and we are left totaly carless.

I need to just ask a quick question on this thread. How long have people waited for their mobility cars from the time of ordering?
TIA

lou33 · 03/05/2009 19:13

think it was about 6 weeks in my case

Debs75 · 03/05/2009 20:00

We had to waut about 8 weeks as we ordered ours just before the new models came out. It would of been longer but we relented and got a silver invisible car instead of a nice colour.
Can you get a grant to help pay the deposit? We have a 7 seater but the rear seats aren't brill for adults so we would love the kia sedona or something big with proper rear seats. Have a new baby and can't have her near ds as he is liable to kick her when i drive the wrong way.

With my 1st car I waited 3 months, but with this car they said it would be ready in two weeks. But I had to wait 6 weeks until my 3 years were up.

Deeeja · 03/05/2009 20:23

I would need to have alot of space, for sn buggy, and will also need to fit an umbrella fold somewere, also need to seperate 6 year old with asd, who is liable to lash out. Am thinking about citroen c8, or ford galaxy. Willl need to fit 4 car seats. Maybe I should just buy a bus, and be done with it!

ChopsTheDuck · 05/05/2009 09:43

Ive orderd the picasso and should get a rough date on thurs. But been told could be waiting up to 8 weeks. I've sold my car as a non runner and now have no car for ages. I wouldn't be so bothered if the dts school wasn't 4 miles away.

citreon c8 is nice, and prob cheaper than a galaxy? I like the ford s max but dont want to be forking out £2.5k every 3 years, so went for the citreon.

They do have a charity or somethign where you casn apply for grants to help with the deposit.

I am so cross , supposed to get my car on the 12th May- one week and get adaptions moved across.
Just phoned to check everything was organised to return old car on monday and collect new car on tuesday. Only to be told car not in yet and will only be in maybe week of the 18th May.

When I ordered it they said 2 weeks and now this is 8 weeks later.

I am so annoyed as was looking forward to getting the new car a week today and also just had it valeted yesterday and wasn't going to allow kids to eat or put dirty shoes anywhere near it so hopefully would get good condition bonus.

Mitchell81 · 05/05/2009 10:28

Chops hope its not too long without a car, The VW touran is as big as the citroen grand picasso, if that is an option?

Deeeja We can fit 3 carseats in the middle row of our VW touran and with one seat up in the boot can still fit a double buggy and Mclaren major.

glitteryb6 · 05/05/2009 11:55

on the subject of fitting in multiple car seats...
have you seen this site

www.multimac.co.uk/home

amazing idea but no doubt expensive!

ChopsTheDuck · 05/05/2009 12:29

I think I looked at the VW and wasn't very keen on it. It looked very basic. I also felt a bit cramped, which is probably just me, but I'm 5'11 and didnt feel comfy at all.

glittery, Ive seen those before. I thinkt he 4 seater one is £1300. Which isn't that bad when you consider how much more it is to have to fork out for a 7 seater car. I just couldn't imagine having my four lined up like that, they'd defo be bloodshed on the school run!
