ds1 2.8 has started to use the potty (well 3 times) but we only strted last night. he was nappy off and stood for a pee iyswim i bellowed at him potty he ran away so i scooped him up and put him on the potty where he sat and did a pee. second time he assumed the position i yelled potty and of he trotted and used the potty. 3rrd time he did it all by himself but didnt sit -s he sort of braced himself against the wall leaning over it. (he has a better aim than his dad already) Each time he was rewarded with a chocolate button.
i havent even thought about potty training for him so need lots of advice.
my worries are he is fine with no pants/ nappy on - shall i just leave him pants free for a couple of days then get him in normal pants so he gets used to taking somethind off.
when we are at home he doesnt have to ask he knows where it is. he is non verbal have had a look at the makaton sign which he is learning but has coordination issues so all his signs look the same. shall i teach him a sign for toilet based on that sign so he can ask others.
what about out and about shall i leave him in anppies or try him nappy free (obviously not a first)
please help if you have a trained asd or non verbal child as he has sprung this on me.

I think he sounds like he is doing so well , I would bite the bullet and leave the nappy off. I did this with my ASD (and then non verbal ASD child). On trips out, we did have some accidents but I thought going back to nappies now and again would confuse. At this age, you can take the potty with, but actually my son learned quite quickly to hold on till home. With poos, I also used choc and put him on the loo for ages before bathtime. He learned relatively quickly, though I spent a lot of hours standing outside the loo waiting for something to happen!Put toys and books in there for him too, so it becomes a fun experience! Good luck!

Hi,

I totally agree with the advice, you need to stick it out with the pants so as not to cause confusion. I think the making it fun is spot on our downstairs loop and bathroom have a selection of books and toys next to them and then my son gets a few minutes of a favourite dvd on portable dvd player when he does a poo and chocolate for a wee.

It sounds like you are both doing a great job, i wish dd (3.2) would use her potty, she's still not interested even though she has managed to wee on it a couple times (just luck i think). .

well this morning we left nappy off and he peed on the changing mat. he did have a nappy on all night. we have been out this morning and i put a nappy on. we went to buy pants it will be nappy off at home. wehave one of those fancy fisher price potties as he would not even sit on another i think its because it looks like a toilet and thats where mummy goes.
cant really lug that about everywhere with him and a 10 month old. now he seems to have the idea will try him on a normal potty or toilet seat.
my only real worry is him telling me he needs to go as he often gets his signs muddled up.
