Anyone had a wheelchair on an ice rink?

Ds was obsessed with Dancing on Ice when it was on and we were at a shopping centre the other week and there were 2 kids in wheelchairs being pushed about the ice.

ds got very excited so i went to ask if someone could take him on but was told no, i had to take him on myself.
last time i was on the ice i was about 10 and lets just say it wasnt a success...think ankles bent in, flailing arms, lots of falling over and banging into the sides etc!

Sooo what i want to know is, has anyone tried it before? Does the wheelchair steady you or do you have to be steady yourself to stop it tipping over?
Ds would LOVE it but i really dont want to scar him for life!

I once got as far as thinking of taking one of my mindees on the ice, so not sure either. The main thing that held me back was my local ice rink always seems to be busy and didn't want to try unless it was quiet.

I would imagine that a wheelchair would be quite stable on the ice in its self as long as the person pushing and steering it is a reasonably good skater to start with. Although if you are likely to fall over then the chair would probably go with you, or continue on till impact if let go during said falling over.

riven, do they use the tray thingys? they do it here but you have to book and i haven't got round to it...

i need to find out where to get one from, we're moving to a village which has a free ice rink and i will need to be organised by that point lol... no excuses acceptable by then...

I saw a little boy in wheel chair this year at Hampton Court Palace ice rink being pushed by his father ... looked pretty stable. Here (last line):

Our local ice rink has special session available to wh/ch users fortnightly and we are considering taking dd next time its her birthday.

My experience in the snow & ice in feb was not good, but I guess we don't need to get anywhere fast on an ice rink - and there will be no hills!

think i might give it a go, theres an ice rink in Glasgow which is all enclosed so no onlookers to laugh if i fall over, might find out whats the quietest day to go

I skated in my youth and would be willing to assist if anyone wants to try this at Bradford ice rink.
