Born to be different is back on Channel 4, starting next Tuesday at 9pm. The children are aged 8-9 now. Lovely series but always quite a tough one to watch.

Does anyone remember what conditions the children featured have? I thought I heard one of them say something that sounded similar to DDs condition, I didn't watch the first one I don't think.

used2bthin · 21/04/2009 23:00

Just remembered I did watch it, DD was quite small so all a bit of a blur.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 21/04/2009 23:06

some more info here. From what I remember there was a little boy with achrondoplasia (sp), another little boy with Down Syndrome and a little girl with Spina Bifida. Also a chromosomal condition from what I remember.

It was a really good series--I just wish we saw more children with disabilities on 'normal' TV programmes, especially on kids' TV.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 21/04/2009 23:41

i agree arabica- when I'm watching cbeebies with dd I just keep thinking why haven't they got a little kid with a walking frame on boogiebeebies or green balloon? why couldn't children with all different types of sN actually be 'seen'.

Oh I shall watch this used to love it, although only remember the one with the chromosomal disorder, can't remember her name.

LadyFio · 22/04/2009 08:14

there was a little boy with tuberus scelrocis (sp?) aswell

I can't actually watch it

MuffinBaker · 22/04/2009 08:15

Is this the one about a little girl called Shelby? If so, her mum is amazing and her partner seems just wonderful.

LadyFio · 22/04/2009 08:17

you mean shelbie, she has 9p deletion I think

LadyFio · 22/04/2009 08:17

sorry I was not picking up on your spelling muffin, I cross posted

MuffinBaker · 22/04/2009 08:18

Wouldn't have taken offence

I have follwoed this series from the beginning. It'll be wery interesting to see the progress of these lovely children.

madwomanintheattic · 22/04/2009 09:31

hbob - my kids like the little girl in the 'dumping ground' on tracy beaker - if dd2 gets steadier as she grows i think they might be quite similar lol.

scope's 'in the picture' campaign makes small inroads...

i've never heard of born to be different, will have to try and remember next week!

A friend of mine is doing The Great North Run this year to raise money for achrondoplasia she used to be Hamish's doctor before he went to NZ!!

thecloudhopper · 22/04/2009 21:23

thanks for letting me know .. I have followed this series from the start as my Nephew was born with spina bifida but his case is more servear than the little girl Emily. Hell of a hard watch though

Mitchell81 · 22/04/2009 21:46

I have also watched it from the beginning and my DD was also born in 2000, the same year all the children in the series are.

emkana · 22/04/2009 23:34

Can't wait to watch, esp to see Hamish (as ds has condition similar to achondroplasia)

sphil · 23/04/2009 10:16

I have followed this too - I read somewhere that the mother of the boy with autism and tubular(?) sclerosis has now been dx with multiple sclerosis herself .

Woooozle100 · 23/04/2009 11:19

glad its back on

I based my decision on not to have blood screening for ds in pg partly on Nathan in this series (as well as couple of people I'd met) Was v touched by his family/story and course he is just gorgeous. I thought about it when I became pg following year

Series was on again just after dd is born. DD is more like Shelbie. Shelbie was v poorly at this time and there was that heartbreaking conversation with docs about 'letting her go'

Looking forward to seeing how all of the children are getting on

Hi. I'm not a Mum, but saw a message here about Born to Be Different and Shelby having pneumonia. Could anybody tell me if she pulled through? I do hope so.

I watch the series as I have a disability (cerebral palsy) myself and I record it on to DVD for the care agency that I use. I was really pleased when C4 started the series as I was disappointed the the BBC's Child of our Time ignored the issue of disability.

Thanks,
Sarah
