Developmental check with paed - what to expect?

My DS has his developmental check with the paed next week and wondering what to expect? He was referred by the SALT who thinks (as I do) he is on the ASD spectrum. It is at 1:30 which is not an ideal time as he tends to be tired at that time but I daren't cancel as have had to wait 3 mths for the appt. Have been told to allow 1-2 hours which seems like a long time?
Thx

We had our first appointment in Jan t 1.30 too, it turned out quite good as she got to see my ds at his worst, which sound terrible.
The first appointment is basically just going over history and gives the paed a chance to observe your ds. Don't expect a dx there and then because it is a long process.
I would recommend you have someone else there so you can concentrate on answering the paeds questions, as there will be a lot, and the other person can keep an eye on your ds. I didn't take anyone with me and was totaly stressed out by the end as ds2 just wanted to play in the sink with the running water the whole time.
I was there just over an hour but it didn't seem that long as there was a lot to go over.
Good luck for next week.

Good luck - we have a multidisciplinary assessment for DS (3) in 2 weeks. Three months' waiting time is actually good - we waited for more than 6 months. They need the time to go through all the questions - I definitely second jjones to have someone with you there; moral support as much as anything, ime you never know how you're going to feel after. Keep us posted, and again, good luck

Have just had a call from our SALT and has put in 6 weekly appts from end April so things are moving on . We only had the assessment a few weeks ago so pleased with progress.

expect to be asked lots of background question from pg/birth onwards about his development, and to be asked about the early milestones as well as current issues.

Got a call at 10am this morning cancelling appt as dr was ill. Am gutted as was all geared up for it and dh had taken day off. Not sure when will be rescheduled. All this waiting is so hard.

Oh, that really sucks. I know doctors get sick sometimes, but what a bummer. Pester them (if you can) about rescheduling, and good luck (we have our appt a week today, eek)

Got a call this morning for an appt at 10am as there was a cancellation. Read on.....
Got of to a bad start with a half hour delay and just as we were due to go in he found the lift and starting pressing all the buttons but wouldn't move. Tried everything and in the end had to carry him kicking and screaming.

Calmed down for a bit when we got it but did as he normally does his thing. She tried to interact with him but he wasen't having it. She then said "No" to him and that was a disaster as he just stood at the door trying to get out. She suggested maybe coming to my home to see if we could get him in a better mood but in fairness he was as good as it gets and he was fine when we got there so we continued with the 100's of questions with him sitting on her desk in his nappy playing with her phone and computer!

She did mange to make quite a few observations whilst doing this eg his obsession with clocks, hand flapping and jumping on tippy toes and in his own world. Also said it is highly likely he is on the ASD spectrum but difficult to attain what level. Said report would take 5-6 weeks - is that normal! Also made an appt for blood and urine tests just to rule out anything else? MDA Will happen in the next 4 months. Very stressful ......

Sorry this was stressful overthebar. I think they do things differently in different places because we didn't do the blood and urine tests and had a SALT assessment and then the MDA, instead of dev paed in between. What matters is that the ball has started rolling; I'm sure the MDA will take some of that stress away (I know it did for me)
