Hi all, and sorry to be nosey. DS is 4 and will start school in september. I would like to go back to work.

I think I will have to help him at home reinforcing anything they are teaching him at school, I was wondering if you work with your DCs at home? How much time? Or in your experience is it best to just let the school get on with the teaching?

is he getting any additional help at nursery? if so there should be a transition meeting where you can talk through these issues with the staff at the new school. it's really helpful for the school as well as you tbh, this year dd2's school got 10 sn kids into yr r, only 2 of which they had prior knowledge of...

is he only school action/ +? or are they considering statementing?

most ms schools have a parent's evening in the first term where they give a talk to the year group parents on the yr r curriculum and how you can help at home. you will obviously have a parent's evening yourselves with the teacher to discuss how he is settling in/ getting on, and an iep meeting termly if he is on sa/+ etc. these are the ideal forums to discuss with the teachers what would be beneficial. probably the best thing to do for the first term is to make sure that all the therapists/ professionals are working together in the new team and try to relax a little on the 'schooling/ learning' bit - concentrate on the settling in and getting him used to the new environment. the eyfs curriculum is very much play based now, so it is more of a continuation of nursery-type learning...

get onto them about transition meetings if it hasn't been organised already though.

good luck with the job hunting!

thank you for those tips madwoman.
Actually I am not in the UK. He doesn't get extra help at the nursery, I work with him at home (kind of divising my own programme) he will have a fulltime 1 to 1 at school. I will def. try to get as much information as possible about the curriculum from the school. Info between nursery and school is not a problem (nursery is a bit useless though)

I just don't know how much extra support he will need at home. Don't even know if it is realistic for me work full time?

we're moving o'seas in august and i'm trying to work out that particular transition conundrum lol...
sorry about all the irrelevant acronyms then lol.

madwomanintheattic · 14/04/2009 15:49

i'd be looking at jobs, but not making any definite plans until jan...

TinySocks · 14/04/2009 15:56

Oh how exciting!!! Good luck with your move.

I don't want to say where I am on an open forum, just in case someone from around here identifies me . I prefer to stay anonymous . Hope you don't mind.

very good point Fio. I have no choice unfortunately, has to be ms. I get the feeling that I will have to do more than what I'd like to. Totally agree with you about being a therapist.

no, no worries. i do often think if anyone i know in rl read anything i post on here they must be able to identify me immediately lol. whether i say where i am or not. i'm not in the least identifiable with one factoid, but tie a couple together and there can't actually be that many people in my circs lol. i do often wonder if people are living round the corner though. (particularly if people admit to being o'seas - where we are fetching up in the summer is so small that i may as well wear a 'madwoman' t-shirt. i wondered the other day if obituaries were going to have to start listing people's web forums with their usernames lol... my prediction for 'tomorrow's world'...)

is it an international/ brit school or local? (ignore me if that would be tmi lol) - was just wondering if there would be a lang/ comms issue in addition to the usual (lol) comms/slt stuff, or whether it is english speaking - if you are having to try and do the slt/ comms work in two langs that could be more time consuming. if you have managed to get full time 1-1 that should be an enormous help. hopefully there shouldn't be too much additional time required out of school? will the therapists visit and advise the 1-1 class teacher? we found that extremely beneficial, but again i suppose it depends on whether you are using private therapists etc. tricky one without outing yourself lol!

are there lots of job opportunities or are you going to have to grab one if it comes along?

hi madwoman, I didn't go back to mumsnet yesterday so just read your message today.

About the internet thing... there are so many lurkers, and I have told a couple of friends about mumsnet. I just feel that if someone identified me I would have to be much more cautious about things I post about school and nursery. Does that make sense? Probably not.

I have very happy to answer your questions and talk to you about my experience moving abroad. I have CAT, send me a message.
