DS ASD and very nearly 4. He is fighting so much against having shoes and socks on its really wearing me down. today it took 2 of us 30 mins to get shoes on which we eventually changed for sandals. I have no idea what the problem is. He does have a dodgy toenail which I thought was the problem but he is fighting just as much about sandals. We got him measured and new shoes about 6 weeks ago so his shoes shouldn't be too tight or hurt. He seemed very comfortable in them at first. He is very sensitive to having toenails cut (we are sleep cutters here)so obviously sensory issues there. He also has had some very strange unexplainable bumps on the soles of his feet but they have just appeared and the problem has been for about 2 weeks now. I wish he could just talk and tell me what the problem is.

Hi, my friend has a DS on the ASD and the other week he came out of school barefoot, refusing to wear anything on his feet. He is 7 and quite tall and heavy, so she couldn't carry him. He really, really refused to have footwear on. She had no option but to let him walk home barefoot. He couldn't tell her what the problem was either. His Mum thinks it is a sensory thing, but even knowing that isn't much help, really?

DS2 can also be a bit like this, at times. He doesn't like shoes to be 'floppy'.

He likes them to feel tight when he tightens the velcro and if they aren't tight he describes them as floppy and won't wear them.

Agree with BusyBM if he could tolerate a trip to the Dr's might be useful to see what the bumps are.

Its so heart breaking to not know what he thinking and that he doesn't understand what we say. He might be thinking we are just hurting him for no reason. He has never had feet issues before he has always preferred barefoot but never complained about having his shoes on. He loves going out and is usually very willing to put shoes and socks on. He has the memory of an elephant so its possible that some one has hurt his foot whilst putting on his shoes and socks and he has kept the memory. The bumps dont seem to be there at the moment so there would be nothing to show the doctor.

Agree with busybeingmum, is it any help to try to "ignore" the things which may not be so relatively important? It won't hurt not to wear the shoes - or is that the thin end of the wedge?

Good Luck
