Apart from being Down syndrome, with a heart condition, sight and hearing problems, non epileptic fits and mobility issues he also has a lot of other things going on, too many to list. But heres a few, problems with noise e.g hoover, shop tannoy, people shouting. Problems with crowds. Can't brush his teeth, wash his face, cut his hair etc. Licks things he shouldn't. Doesn't play, has an obsession with cars and dinosaurs. Eats limited food, won't wear stripes, buttons etc. Only sits watching cars or peoples feet when out and will only sit down when in public. Would just like peoples thoughts. Thanks.

What do you think these other things could point towards, just so we know.

It sounds to me like he has sensory issues with the noises/bright lights and not liking his hair cut. My 3.6 DS2 has ASD and is very similar.

Sorry forgot to mention son is 8 years old although is severly delayed. Thanks 5ITE will let you know what I think if i get more replies.

Sensory integration therapy would probably help a lot. How old is he (wondering if he gets any sensory work at school).

mrsturnip · 09/04/2009 20:51

oh cross posted. Yes sensory integration therapy. Lots of it does sound a bit ASDish if that's what you're wondering, but lots of ASD type behaviour arises because of sensory issues, so I'd say skip any diagnosis worries (unless it would help) and go for SI therapy.

mumgoingcrazy · 09/04/2009 21:40

I agree with Mrsturnip. SI has helped us (and still helping) so much with DD2's sensory issues.

Do you have an OT that is sensory trained?

devientenigma · 10/04/2009 00:24

Thanks MT, we have been down the route of an ASD diagnosis to be told his SPD is not getting the correct help however he does have a lot of autistic traits and as he is developmentally delayed to reassess in a few year. He has had his SPD revoked due to the diet not working so he can't be this. So was just curious what people thought.
MGC, hows everything going? sounds like it's going well. Yes the OT is supposidly sensory trained. As nothing is working she took this off him but has now asked me to do another profile?
Take care everyone.

Oh we had a sensory profile done which showed lots of problesm & then the OT said he didn't have time to work with ds1 We're using DIR Floortime now instead. It pays a lot of attention to sensory regulation.

anonandlikeit · 10/04/2009 11:36

Hi devientengma
My fiinds ds1 with doens syndrome was also dx with ASD, unfortunately she wasn't able to access the usual cdc route for dx, apparently they don't take children with ds (discriminattion within the NHS, but thats another story).
She fought for dx witht eh support of his paed & it has allowed him to access all the ASD support open to any child with ASD. This includes lots of sensory therapy.
I'm not suggesting your ds has ASD, BUT getting the correct assessment & dx is sometimes the only way to get the correct level of help & suupport.

anonandlikeit · 10/04/2009 11:39

just had a look at your profile (sorry nosy) what a goreous little poser your ds is.

devientenigma · 10/04/2009 11:51

Thanks for that Anon. DS has gone further downhill as time goes on. He won't wear a shirt now because of the buttons not too mention the fact it has checks. I like that one as he seems more dressed than you can get him now although it is a few year old. His hair is also cut, back in the days when we could pin him down to do it. Then in the other photos his hair is worse, snipping at it when asleep etc.LOL.
