IM so so mad at the paediatricians here

my son has autism and the paediatrician we had left in the summer, since then there has been various locums who dont stay long. we saw one of these in november dr A who was horrible to me in appointment saying i was depressed and i was the centre of bens problems - there is not evidence of any link between depression and autism, then she sent a clinic letter also saying the same. then recently the diability living allowance people dwp sent a form to the paediatrician asking about my son we were then refused the mobility component we had applied for, to see if the reason was obvious from the paeds reply i asked (as youre within your rights to do) for a copy of this form the paed had filled in. well it arrived yesterday and in the further information section the paed (a different one another locum who has never seen us - so this is obviously written in my sons notes) has written "mother has depressive illness including post natal psychosis and needed medication and counselling" now i have never has post natal psychosis only post natal depression which is very different, and even then its nothing to do with my sons autism. i have checked with gp and health visitor and they have no records saying any paed has asked for my notes and they would need my permission anyway to see them, and in my notes there is no mention of post natal psychosis as i never had it. grrr i could go on but i am so mad i would go on forever!! currently liasing with pals, health visitor, gp practice manager to see what can be done now but i am so upset that this has been done and 2 paediatricians have allowed this to happen, the first one to write it based on nothing but her imagination, and the second to write it on a form which is clearly about ben in anycase!! i dont expect anyone to have any pearls of wisdom about it just needed a moan!!!

I'd be cross too.

I'd be very cross!!

I hope you pursue your complaint and get them to retract those letters and remove all references to this incorrect information from your and your son's medical files, as you are entitled to under the Data Protection Act.

I would stop dealing with this Paed and ask for a referral to a specialist in ASD, Paeds are just jack-of-all-trades for children's illnesses and some have very little knowledge about ASD. You need to see a specialist.

Best wishes

jennybensmummy · 09/04/2009 15:10

we had a specialist that left so these were just locum paeds until they get a replacement, if i had choise i wouldnt bother seeing anyone who wasnt any good at all, only have had to as ben on melatonin and need to see them for repeat prescription every so often!

I get repeat prescriptions for melatonin from our GP now. He initially said he couldn't prescribe it but then he contacted the Consultant and afterwards agreed to carry on prescribing. Perhaps your GP could do the same?

jennybensmummy · 09/04/2009 16:32

my gp is next to useless so i doubt it but will try thats a good idea! i think its like as an assessment of how its working though every few months so maybe the paed has to however useless they are?! grrr bloody numpties! im getting steps closer now to getting bens notes as at least got request form being sent otu to me which is a start!

OMG that's shocking! Bet your local papers would be interested...

God, I thought that ridiculous theory that depressed/ cold mums "caused" autism had last been seen in the 1950s. These "doctors" need to update their ludicrously inadequate knowledge of what causes autism - fairly clearly, genetic factors triggered possibly by environmental trigger. I would seriously write a letter of complaint to the boss of the Health Authority. Find out who is the top dog, and write a nice clear letter. These people need sorting out before they spread their ignorance more widely and add to the troubles of us mums - who already have more than they will ever know on our plates! Oh, I am so mad on your behalf! I will read the draft letter if you want a second opinion!

5intheEgg · 09/04/2009 19:40

How bloody awful! What a cheeky doctor. I'd ask the DWP to write to someone else as the Paed sounds like a right idiot.

I hate this idea that depressed mothers cause ASD. As if we don't have enough to feel guilty about.

madmouse · 09/04/2009 20:10

oh no not the refrigerator idea again

ffs

using that theory ds is certain to develop autism as his mummy wanted to run out of hospital when he was in NICU

bl**dy idiots

jennybensmummy · 09/04/2009 21:49

I am just so annoyed an yes i know its mostly just hurt feelings but to me its so much more than that its the fact this has been sent out of hospital to dla and possibly to social workers. i just want to go really mental at them but got to stay relatively calm or it just gives them more ammunition for the psychosis diagnosis that a random locum paediatrician gave me in my sons appointment bloody stupid!!

That's actually libellous isn't it? Do you know any solicitors who could phone them on your behalf - scare them into action? You have a claim as losses have been incurred (eg overdraft interest caused by delayed benefits, stress to yourself and consequent repercussions in your DS's condition.)
