End of tether with ds - toileting issues. Help!

My ds is nearly 10 yo, and has moderate cp with severe ish learning problems. He has been toilet trained since he was 4yo. The first year was very difficult, but then slowly things have improved so that he can stay dry for weeks and weeks.

And then out of the blue it all falls apart, and he wees here there and everywhere. He never tells us he needs a wee, just tells us (by signing) that it is too late.

So I have been toileting him at set times of the day for ages, as have school.

Sometimes he comes home with loads of washing from school,, sometimes none.

The latest "trick" is to give him a sticker each time he successfully goes to the toilet.
But even this has failed the last two days.

I am so fed up of changing his pants/trousers again and again. He says he is sorry, but then does it again.

Will he ever improve? Will maturity come? I am worried it will always be this way.

BTW he still wears nappies at night, as he has never mastered staying dry (or clean) overnight. That is another thing I would like to sort out, but there's no hope if he can't manage in the day.

ANyone else had similar problems? I would really appreciate some advice on what to do next.

He also has medicine (epilim) for epilepsy and have always wondered if this is hindering things, like if he can't recognize the feeling of needing the toilet due to the medicine or the epilepsy. (THis is pure guesswork, or just making excuses for him!!)

hi . my dd does not have cp but does have epilepsy and is 7. She is on epilim. She is always needing to go to the toilet. About every 10/15 minutes "otherwise i will wet myself" she says when i question her. It seems to be getting worse ie more frequent. she has been on epliem for 2.5 years. I am not sure if there is a link? I am thinking of booking a doctors appointment so will let you know if he says there is a link!

Thanks for reply. We have an appointment at the end of the month, so I will ask about epilim side effects. If your doc knows of a link between epilim and toileting, I would feel much better that it's not just hime being very awkward and lazy.

As a matter of interest, how much epilim is your dd on? My ds is on 400mg twice per day. Wondering if this is a lot... He is about 20kg.

HOpe your dd epilepsy is under control. Rotten condition to have, isn't it?

Thanks again

I was on epilim and I didn't notice any difference in needing the toilet. I was taking it as an adult though so might be irrelevant. Hope you get some constructive help.
