Painfully shy....

Have posted this in behaviour/development as well but am not sure whether this behaviour is typical or not of a kiddy who may have ASD? I am now gradually moving away from thinking he may have an ASD as literally in the last week or two we have seen big jumps in his progress, ie echolalia drastically dropping, conversation and understanding hugely better, cooperative play taken off now etc but still waiting for his appt to get him checked out properly just in case. Anyway, thought I'd ask you all here,xx

My DS is 3.10 and is soooo shy despite being a full on, loud, physically active and happy little man at home and outside. Its quite upsetting actually and I am just wondering if anyone else' lo is similar.

For example....yesterday he went to sleep at my mums house for the night. No problem at all. Later my brother and his gf dropped by to say hello to him (I had gone home) and as soon as they walked in he looked all panic stricken, took himself up to the bedroom and shut the door! Mum went up and played with him and then carried him downstairs with her. He did then stay downstairs but sat on her lap or stayed very very close to her. When my brother went to leave he happily said goodbye etc!

He is ok when HE wants to say hello to people ie checkout assistants, people in the street but is thrown when they say hi first. Will cover his eyes and hide behind me. Will do this if anything is new to him actually that he is suspicious of.

Am worried about him starting school for this reason as instead of going withdrawn and crying quietly he will go into full blown crying and wanting his mummy LOUDLY lol!!

So, anyone else have a lo who is shy and any ideas how to help him? Thanks,x

my ds has ASD and he will not speak to family at times and will hide away in his room he wont say hello to people unless prompted to and even then sometimes will hide his face

its more not knowing how to communicate or what to do i never force him as nt children can be shy and choose not to speak to people

my ds works on his own agenda and thats fine the older he gets he will learn how to be more sociable

my ds starts school sept and this is a worry to me as he doesn't speak to anyone with out prompting outside of controlled environments like that he is loud and bubbly and chatty i would put it down as an age thing as well as his ASD i would just let him be and not force to be sociable other children are just the same

my ds has HFA and his understanding and communication has really come on he doesn't repeat anymore this stopped when his understanding and communicating improved

i read that echolalia is a way of letting you know they have heard but unable to communicate back but repeat to let you know they heard what you said

when my ds speech come along he stopped this altogether

sorry cant be much help but with help and assistance they will learn how to communicate but as your ds has only just made improvements i wouldn't worry as it may well come along when confident with communicating i found when my ds struggles he wouldn't talk to others now he will but when he wants to
