A few questions,

  • Do i need to get a statement for dd2, she will be starting main stream nursery at the end of the month, she is non-verbal and we are waiting for a dx of ASD?

  • How do i get a statement?

  • Also we were talking to someone at dd's sn nursery today and they asked if we had a social worker, do we need one? How do we get one?

Kind of new to the whole statement thing, we are at the beginning of getting ds2 statemented, meeting is for the 30 April (eek).

As far as I know, the EP or school they are in have to start it off, but I could be wrong. They won't do her until she is near reception stage though. How old is she again?

As for SW, I am waiting to be allocated one for DS2. New paed in Dec was shocked I hadn't been allocated one at dx, so not sure if we "need" one, but I've been tol it is vetter to have than not to We shall see.

She's only 3 so has another year and a bit until she starts school, i am trying to push for a 1:1 for nursery and thought if she was statemented i would get more chance of getting one .

We are getting help from portage which is great, i'm just worried she won't get the help she needs in a main stream nursery.

DS2 is in MS nursery 3 times a week, and they have given him 1:1 without him being statemented. I suspect you'd have to wait for a dx before getting one done. Have you had any joy getting closer to getting her dx yet?

We are expecting a dx in the next year , they don't want to rush into a dx because they feel her speech my come along, they said she's somewhere on the spectrum but it may be AS ,HFA or ASD .

Is she still with cahms? Must be so hard for you. I've got to go to pawd next week and see if we can get a dx for dyspraxia on top of his already asd dx. Marvelous! I've also got to explain to paed that when I saw him in December last year, I mae out things were better than what they were. Bearing in mind I had just had ds3 3 weeks before, I'm hoping he won;t be hard on me

I'm not sure but I think most LEAs don't issue statements for nursery. They might provide some money to the nursery though. You can apply for a statement yourself but I would defo wait until you get a formal diagnosis and she starts nursery - essentially you need evidence that she can't cope without the 1 to 1 and get speech and language put on there as well. Contact IPSEA or SOS SEN for advice or the NAS advice people are good. Attila the Meerkat is the authority on statements so she's a good person to ask.

Ask the SENCO at the nursery what provision they can give her.

Hi Marne
You don't have to wait for school to request an assessment that may lead to a Statement - you can write directly to the LEA and request one yourself. If you google IPSEA you will find sample letters and instructions on how to do it.

Hi Marne

DD is now 3.4 and she has had a very vague 'global development delay' tag since 2.10, and epilepsy since 3.1. Having said that, she has had 'standard' 1:1 funding since 8 weeks after starting preschool. Her issues were picked up by them. Prior to starting we thought she was just a high maintenance child.

The Area Inclusion officer has been to see her 6 months on, last week, and feels that she has not made progress in terms of her needs, so she is applying for increased 1:1 funding to ensure that she keeps having full-time 1:1.

None of this is with a statement. The AIO will start the statementing process in December in time for reception start.

I don't think there would be any harm in applying for a statement now, but I don't think that you necessarily need one to get your DD 1:1 support.

Hi Marne

As WetAugust has correctly pointed out, IPSEA have model letters you can use. Their website is www.ipsea.org.uk. You will need to write to the Chief Education Officer at your LEA and give the LEA six weeks to reply.

Parents are far better off applying for Statements rather than anyone else as they can appeal in the event the LEA say no to Statutory Assessment. You do not need anyone's permission to apply for a statement and school or EP do not have to start the process. The EP's role here is to see the child and make recommendations re their educational needs.

Have you applied for DLA?. If not as yet do consider this.

Who is the AIO by the way?. I would not wait until December personally, I'd start the ball rolling some considerable time earlier. As statements as well can take six months to set up (and that is if goes smoothly and without a visit to SENDIST the tribunal people) I would not delay unduly.

Area Inclusion Officer - now I know!!

we had funding in place before ds started preschool for a 1-1 the ep had been involved since he was 2.6
,and I started the ball rolling for a statement in January as hes due to go to reception september ,ds is 3.9 in hindsight wish I had found this board earlier and got it going were now waiting till May for propsed statement. And sm expecting to go to tribunal as I want sn school

Ds has GLd,MLD,SLi (as in non verbal)and hypermoblity and hypertonia

We applied for DD's statement when she was 2 and got it a few months later. Before the statement, the nursery was providing 1:1 which they paid for. After the statement we still got 1:1 but it's covered by the LEA (so the nursery are happy) PLUS a wonderful SN specialist teacher with loads of experience drops in nearly every week to help her keyworker implement her targets. DD has GDD, can say a few words, no overall diagnosis. So I would definitely recommend that you go for it--good luck!

ds1 is 2.7 he is starting pre school after easter. he has not got a formal dx yet but paed said he is on spectrum see how he goes with salt and pre school. He will have 1-2-1 funded by county this was arranged by early years advisory teacher. Just looking at the letter is says the code of practice is early years action plus. I know it goes 3 levels early years, then early years action plus then statement. I have been told he will get 1-2-1 at nursery which he will start in jan if he still needs it and they only usually do statements if they need a placement at special school but you can request one yourself which I will do if I think ds needs it. I know kids miss out on help because of various reasons if the do not have a statement (was a teacher in previous life). Our hv put me in touch with the advisory teacher and she also arranged sn classes for ds1. so from easter he will be at preschool 2 days a week with 1-2-1 and sn classes 2 days a week leaving 1 day to cause mayhem at home
