Is this a good present for a 3 year old with ASD?

He is about to turn 3, and is non-verbal and somewhere on the autistic spectrum. I thought I would like to do him a photo book (like this) with photos of his friends and important places. His SALT has said to use photos to reinforce words/names.

Is this a good idea?

Sorry should have made it clear that this is a friend's child.

My son is three (soon to be four) and his Early Years Autism woman thingy has suggested a similar thing for him. Also (strangely) my other son's girlfriend (he's 20 and at uni) is upstairs doing him a scrapbook of pictures of their first year together for their anniversary which although slightly sick-making, also suggests it's a suitable gift as well as a useful thing?

my dd1 is 4.6, and loves photobooks.

I have done her quite a few - with various family members in a range of situations.

My tip is to include as many different situations as feasibly possible, so that when you (or his parents) are "reading" it for the millionth time, there is still something new to say. so lots of variation in clothing/exopression (and do include some of people upset too - they are valid emotions)/inside/outside etc

I do one for dd1 now every time I see a good offer - the bonusprint site quite often have their A5 soft back ones on Free for Postage, so she has a few of those.

oh and another tip - I photocopy some of the pages, and then laminate them and tie together with string - she can then flip through to her hearts content on her own, and I don't have to worry about her wrecking it.

If he is non verbal, how about something like this. It holds 8 photos and you record your own voice for each picture. I would have got one of these for DS2 last year if I knew they existed. My friend has one for her NT little boy, and they are great.

it's not good idea - it's an absolutely excellent idea, you sound a very thoughtful and supportive friend

My tip would be not to shy away from putting in photos of boring places that the little lad goes to regularly - library/cafe/Tescos/post office.

oh yes, definitely second the everyday places as well.

the photo album is also good - again, dd1 loves hers (she is a total photo nut! )

Oh thank you so much I am definitely going to do one now.

I love the other suggestions too. They are a bit beyond my budget, but I will be passing the ideas on to his mum!
