Did you spot the new Aspie character on TV last night?

That new series called something like All The Small Things. The most ridiculous story generally although I quite enjoyed it, I really mostly watched because Neil Pearson is in it and I like him. The oldest son, played by Richard Fleeshman(sp?), clearly Aspie. I thought it was done well although I can see the issue coming up of whether the mother is helping him or exploiting him, I hope that gets handled well and so far I don't know what I think.

I saw a bit of it, shame the programme was so dire.

macwoozy · 01/04/2009 13:18

I didn't see that one, but I often wonder whether the Coronation street man(ahh can't remember his name, married to Hayley)will ever get an Aspergers storyline, because he has so many obvious Asperger traits.

There is also going to be an autistic character in home and away.

Davros · 01/04/2009 17:52

I suspect that another character in the dire choir prog is going to turn out to have some sort of learning disabilty, Duke from Tracey Beaker, whatever the actor's name is. And they already have a character who is a dwarf, sorry if that isn't the right term . So they're certainly making an effort.

the actress who plays her does it very well,DS said tonight shes proper auti her mum is she auti in real life!!!

we only live down the road from where they film waterloo road and DS asked to go and see it at the weekend,we saw where carla was hiding at the traffic lights, bless him he was so chuffed at seeing the exact spot.

lol @ 'dire choir' prog. i quite enjoyed it despite it being fairly far fetched as far as storylines go lol. i thought the waterloo road scene with janiece and carla and the new boobs was done very well last night very clever.

What I didn't get about the boy in 'All the small things' was that his mother would talk about someone called 'Tom' (the character's name is Kyle) in the third person, saying 'What would Tom do?' and 'This is what Tom does now' as if 'Tom' was an alias or alter ego for Kyle. This in order to persuade Kyle to do things that he (or indeed a lot of NT people) would not normally do, like join in a choir competition without a choir... Is 'Tom' part of a 'social story'?

Davros · 02/04/2009 14:32

I think "Tom" is his idol, some sort of pop star (don't I sound nearly 50?), he had posters on his wall. Not being up on these things, I assume Tom is fictional, I didn't get the second name. So you're right, Tom is like a Social Story, have they paid Carol Grey?

Tom DeLonge was in the band Blink-182, who had a huge hit a few years ago with "All The Small Things" - the song they sang in the TV prog (I am 39 but I like to pretend I am 19 still ).

Started watching it accidentally and thought it was quite interesting - my DS2 is 5 and currently in process of possibly being diagnosed with ASD so it was a weird kind of insight into how things might be later on. I really worry about him standing out when he is older, bullying etc.

I hope that they don't try to "cure" Kyle of his Aspergers though, it seemed a bit unrealistic that he was suddenly able to get up on stage and sing like that.

Davros · 04/05/2009 11:38

OK, so 2 weeks ago the "unveiled" an amputee and last week and alcoholic!!! It should be ridiculous but I think it works somehow. I'm hooked!

There's an openly ASD character in 'Boston Legal', - Jerry Espensen - though he has Tourettes as well. Very funny. We love watching it. And occasionally very serious, so people do end up learning as well as laughing.

This programme is my guilty secret - so dreadful but I love it! My favourite cringe moment last week was Annette Badlands singing 'Nothing Compares To You' at her estranged brother's funeral...

I didn't see the first episode - have they ever said that Kyle has AS? Because when evil blonde was questiong Neil Pearson about his 'weird son', he just kept saying he was 'different'. Not sure what I feel about this.

luckylady74 · 04/05/2009 23:18

The new series of Skins has an as boy character- he had a whole episode devoted to him which was patchy and hard to believe, but still had me in tears by the end because I empathised with his mum so much.

retiredgoth2 · 04/05/2009 23:30

....I think having an AS character on a TV show is a splendid idea.

Sadly, the only programmes mentioned here that I have ever heard of are Coronation Street and Home and Away, and I've never actually seen either of them....!

retiredgoth2 · 04/05/2009 23:31

...re-read the thread!

Heard of 'Holby City" as well!

sphil · 04/05/2009 23:37

RG2 - I would love to hear your take on 'All The Small Things' - sadly last episode tomorrow, so you may have missed a cultural delight
