ASD - Enzymes major improvement !

Hi,

I have just starting giving my son digestive enzymes 'Kirkman Labs Enzym Complete With Dpp-Iv-Enzym' and in just 2 days the changes that I am seeing are so startling.

Yesterday I was watching him playing on the PC and he turned and stared at me like really STARED, he then smiled so naturally and said hiya. It was so natural, and something that I dont think i can explain to family and friends.
Also he gave me kisses today but again they were so different. Normally he just puts his lips to mine and i do the kiss effect, today he kissed me (so perfectly timed), he did this a few times.

His normal sing song voice tonight seemed to be becoming much flatter and normal.
Tonight he asked for milk on his cereal (normally he will only eat it dry) and i cant quite explain he just looked so 'in control' eating with the spoon.

He is experiencing some negative reactions as well, he is quite sensitive, up and down.
Also it seems that textures are bothering him more than normal(pillow material, rug on his feet, trousers etc...)

Its just a bit overwhelming and i feel as if i am dreaming and about to wake. we have seen many positive effects before, but this one is so extreme.

He is also taking probiotics, eyeq fish oils, multi-vitamins and epsom/apple cider vinegar baths.

He is at school tomorrow and i dont want to mix it with his food when i cannot watch over him.

Has anybody else given this particular enzyme?
I have read that enzymes are not at all harmful, is it quite commonly given as a suppliment by other mothers on here?

Thanks for the reply. He is 7. He doesn't have a diagnosis but very dyspraxic and plenty of autistic traits. He used to have very runny stools but ages back I realised he was lactose-intolerant and I used to give him lactase with milk (so not worried about giving enzymes per se). Recently though he seems fine even without the lactase and doesn't seem to suffer from constipation or diarrhoea etc.

Deep thoughts,

How's it going with the enzymes? My friend Sal is doing enzymes with her son and he's doing GREAT!
Sal are you there?
Anyone else started enzymes?

Just wanted to say thanks for bumping this thread up - i'd not seen it before and i'm amazed. I'm definitely going to look into enzymes further Have just joined that Yahoo! group but its making my head hurt, its all a bit overwhelming where to start my research , but i'll come back to it later - thanks again x

I'm going to try this too (Epsom and enzymes). Saw amazing results when we cut aspartame (in his sugar free fruit squash) out of ds' diet. It was as if a switch had been turned back on. His eye contact and joint attention came back within 24 hours and has been constantly back ever since - we are now 9 months on.

We have no dx but I think that's largely due to how much ds has improved - his symptoms of ASD have receded so that they're pretty much language specific now.

jg3kids · 06/04/2009 20:48

Brill Kettlechip!

Meg, where do you live?
Also ladies, I have a doc that I can P.M you if you'd like - covers how to start diet, enzymes etc. I run a local group in my area for Treating Autism, they have groups all around the country, if you're interested in finding a local group go to their website!

Hi

My UK practitioner is called Jean Muscroft, she's a nutritionist and is working with many asd families. You can google her name for her website (for some reason I can't attach link....)

MMM will mail you direct

I need to get some enzymes as ds1 has started stealing gluten (and has become head bangy as a result).

I usually get them from Mandi Mart.

Sassor · 09/04/2009 10:40

Absolutely Saker! My son had no obvious symptoms but he really really responded to the enzymes. They're so safe that it's got to be worth a go. The key is to go 'low and slow' so start with just a little sprinkle. I've tried a few different types but think the Houston enzymes are the best. You can buy them at www.mandimart.com and Mandi knows lots and lots about them, you can email her with any questions and she's really helpful.

Mine have just arrived.

I was wondering whether I need to start slow and low considering he's meant to be gf anyway???

Sorry it?s taken me so long to get back on this thread. Here is an update on how DS is doing on the enzymes.
The first week was quite up and down. He was very happy, but at the same time he was also sensitive. He was teary eyed at very minor things.
He got a tummy ache and also leg cramps on day 5 and I was tempted to stop them, but we just reduced the amount that we gave him and he seemed fine.
It has now been almost 3 weeks since we started the enzymes so here is what I have noticed:

Eye contact - Pretty much perfect (although I know this was helped with previously starting eye-Q chews).
Skin colour - he does not look grey/pale anymore, he is a lovely colour.
Constipation - This worried me at first as I expected loose stools, in fact he seemed more constipated. Finally now he seems to be having better fuller stools instead of small 'rabbit type' stools.
Conversation - This has much improved, he now enjoys a larger range of topics, rather than purely his own interests.
Alertness - Major improvement! He answers first time now and even listens in/joins other peoples conversations.
Temperature - Before DS could not stand heat at all (and he never felt the cold) now he has warmer baths and even asks me to turn on the heating.
Growth - I was shocked to see that he has actually grown 1 and a half centimetres in just under 2 weeks! This is very amazing. (Maybe the leg pains were actually growing pains)
Happiness - Major Improvement, he is much more willing to play with other family members and is less likely to become upset when things don't happen as expected.
Sharing - He offered his chocolate (from Easter) to everybody - this is a first!

I will just give a couple of incidents that have happened in the last week.

Me and DS went to the park where we saw a 3 year old girl. DS said he wanted to talk to her, so I gave him a couple of suggestions of things he could say. He did that very well and then he kept saying things like 'shall we play on the slide' etc...
They ran around together and I noticed the little girl kept saying things like 'I'm faster than you' and 'I?m going first' - normally this would have DS furious, but he just said 'that's ok I don?t mind, I like being second'. I was shocked that he was so laid back, I really praised him afterwards.

A few days ago I decided to give DS breakfast without enzymes to see if I really could see a difference; to be honest he was OK afterwards. So I also gave him lunch without enzymes and wow afterwards you would think he had been drinking rocket fuel. For about 4-5 hours he just kept on running around the house smacking himself off the sofas. At one point he hit the sofa so hard that he went up and over the side.
I put him out on the trampoline so he could release some energy in a safer way.
He was too hyper to hold a conversation and his eye contact was all over the place.

The remaining issues now are anxiety. This does affect him in a big way. It is better, but still holds him back a lot.
Hopefully with time this will improve now.

sorry for reviving this old thread. Just started DS on kirkman's DPP and would be grateful for an update from the people who are using it. It's been five days since we started, have not used the full dose yet, just one quarter of it, haven't noticed anything different, hoping to sort out his constipation problem. When do you stop using it?

We have been trialing them on DS but I have to say that Ds hasnt noticably really improved on them. we had a temporary improvement with the variety of foods he would eat but that has gone now. Just shows how different things work for different kids.

Lostmum1906 · 29/12/2024 20:26

Hello I know this is an old thread, but wanted to know if anyone had tried any more advanced enzymes?

mrsturnip · 30/12/2024 17:45

no - but tell me more!

Lostmum1906 · 30/12/2024 21:22

mrsturnip · 30/12/2024 17:45

no - but tell me more!

Wow @mrsmrsturnip thank you for coming back after 15 yrs!

Did you manage to try enzymes in the end ?

I have Karen's book and it's very well written and does encourage me to use enzymes, though from my recollection proteases has to be separated from the rest.

Currently looking into yeast candida and not specifically leaky gut.

Though have started the Nemechek protocol.

mrsturnip · 09/01/2025 05:45

I used enzymes for a bit, but ds was tricky about taking stuff then way back then and I didn’t see much difference.

we have recently gone back to gluten free. We’re also careful about foods very high in glutamate as those have a big impact on ds’ mood! We call Parmesan angry cheese 😁
