My DS aged 3yrs 10 months has 'wet speech' and when lying on his tummy often has saliva dripping out of his mouth. Is ok when standing up etc but just very wet in his mouth and can blow the odd bubble when speaking! His kisses tend to be slobbery lol!

He drops his 'l' and substitutes them with a 'w' so lollipop is wowwipop!! He can't blow very well, just razzes and can't make his lips into an 'o' shape to make 'oooooooh'.

I have been trying to do some exercises with him such as blowing bubbles in the garden, sining 'lalalalalalalala' etc but need to know if I am helping or not lol!! Any other ideas to help?

Thanks!

you need moondog - I'm an SLT but don't post on speech and langauge issues anymore.

Try giving her a shout by name.

Barmy, I don't really do this sort of work (I don't see it as a priority as I generally work with people with complex issues).

Confusing sounds known as liquids 'l' 'r' 'w' and 'y' (as in yolk) is fairly common in small kids.

Have you a salt? Are you referred? It's a simple matter for someone to set you on the right path by giving you a list of exercises to try out at home.

Practicing sounds in front of the mirror, blowing, sucking, grinning and licking are all things that will strengthen muscles used in speech.

Get referred.

Sorry to hijack!
Moondog?
My DD (22/12) has mild(?) hypotonia - more apparent in her lower limbs and trunk.

Our Physio mentioned that the hypotonia could be responsible for DD lack of speech? (only says Mum).

Is it a possibility?

We are on SALT waiting list at mo.

Will be starting 'blowing, sucking, grinning, licking' exercises tomorrow!

Thx!
