Protective helmets - where do you get them from?

DS2 has developed a blood condition called ITP which means he has no platelets and thus bruises and bleeds easily. We need to be particularly careful that he doesn't have any knocks to the head.

I was wondering if anybody knew where you could get the special helmets/hats from to protect their heads? Are they obtained via the NHS or do you buy them privately? If it is NHS, do they take long to come through, or does the hospital normally have a supply?

Just trying to do anything we can to help whilst his platelet count is zero. At the moment we're getting him to wear a bike helmet outside, but I think it's too bulky and uncomfortable for him, plus he can't see why he should wear it for walking around, which is quite a sensible viewpoint I suppose!

TIA

The physio department at my local hospital made one for my son. It took a couple of visits to get the right measurments and came through 2 weeks after that.
We had a lovely choice of NHS colours!!

It works works but his head does get very hot in the summer.

That's good to know, thanks Embrace. I will ask at the hospital tomorrow what the procedure is.
